My bearded man technique:

Shower
dry
warm water on face
Loreal shave gel (got 2 tubes to use up)
Shave/tidy around neck and beard with DE currently using a derby just because they were free and a shame to waste a blade.
Cold water rinse
Dab dry
Apply apothecary87 milly's beard oil £10 for 10ml but wow awesome stuff
Comb beard
Spend ages trying to sort hair out using pomade give up and go to work looking a mess.

Hmmm. For me it's cold water, alum block, rinse brush & razor and clear away then rinse alum from face and dab dry. In my mind, this gives the alum a minute or two to do its stuff. Rarely use a balm or skin food unless it's a 'special occasion'.
I guess we find what works best for us. thumbup

These Razor pit things..

What kind of results are people getting?

I got one about two weeks ago and have been using before I shave (which at the moment is probably every three days or so.)

Following the instructions, I am using it before I shave, applying some shaving gel to it and making more passes than they suggest, more should be better?

Anyway, the new blade I started with (Mach 3) two weeks ago already needs replacing, today's shave was awful. Is there a trick I am missing here??

I can't specifically help with the razor pit but the key to cartridge razors is making sure the head stays clog free. Soak in hot soapy water for a while after shaving and then run under fast flowing water seemed to be the best results I had, that said blades do need replacing hence why we have so many converts to DEs on here the difference in blade price is eye watering.

Had my first shave with new kit today; Mühle R41 Grande, EJ Plaza Super Badger brush and Mühle RN11 bowl.
Have to say the razor is great. Not used an open comb before and while this is a hybrid-stylee affair it's pretty aggressive but a very close shave was achieved with no effort or drama.

Just shaved for the first time since Sunday and one thing I've noticed is that the DE gets through thicker hair so much easier than my hydro5 blades ever could. Even going WTG it gave a close shave, whereas a cartridge blade left a lot to be desired....

Continue to be impressed and so glad I made the switch

I am finding that DE gives me a closer shave in some places, not so good in others and the odd bloody spot on my neck. On average I am still better with a Mach 3, but perhaps I just need more practice.

The ritual of it all is good though.

That's a beast!
More aggressive than a Gillette Old Type apparently....

Now my new job demands clean shaven every day I'm currently blowing stupid money on those fancy smanchie million blade Gillette's, I only used to shave 3 times a week, sun, tues, thurs at the old job.

So was thinking Muhle R41 but the reviews make it very plain its not for newbies

reviews are point me towards the Muhle R89 as a quality beginner blade

also £9.99 for a 50 pack of feather blades is way cheaper than the Gillette's

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream

already got a brush

sound good ?

yes
Yep - sounds perfect to me - pretty much exactly what I started with.

You may now expect/enjoy many differing opinions. hehe

May I beg to differ already...

EJ89 to start - mildish, safer, less likely to result in a face/sink interface smile

IMHO you can't go wrong with the R89 as it is pretty easy to use.

You might want to consider something a little less aggressive than the Feathers to start off with as (again IMO) they can be somewhat unforgiving if you aren't careful. Possibly try something like the Astra Superior Platinum blades.

The TOBS Sandalwood Shaving Cream is a good start. I find their luxury coconut shaving cream is also very good and helps give a good close shave.

Don't forget an Alum block as you will almost certainly cut yourself a few times as you start out.

You've got me looking at the R41 now! Very tempting...

Do you plan on shaving every day with it?

I shave every weekday and once at the weekend.
Have used it yesterday and today. Loving it. Way more aggressive than my R89 and also has the edge on the braveheart head too.
I think I'd go for the standard handle were I buying again though - not only is the Grande long, it's quite a bit thicker and heavier.

Apart from being comparatively expensive, what's different? No mention of the head make/type which is the important part.
