After reading Lord Grover's post about the R41 I went and ordered one. I'm very impressed so far. I get a more aggressive shave than with my R89 but the end result is far smoother.
I've gone back to the R89 for the daily shave. The R41 is a great razor, but after a couple of weeks I decided it is too aggressive for every day. I use it for 'special occasions' when I need a particularly close shave or if I've not shaved for a few days. cirian75 said:
accidentally ordered some astra platinum instead of astra stainless blades.
Used one last night, smooth, but no where near as sharp and left me with a load of small bleeders.
the correct astra stainless have been ordered but will prob have to have 2 more platinum shaves
My 2nd batch of Astra superior stainless blades arrived on Friday (100 pack this time).Used one last night, smooth, but no where near as sharp and left me with a load of small bleeders.

completely different league to the crappy Astra platinum, but they are harder to find.
last nights shave was great, takes about 10 shaves to get proficient in the use of a DE razor.
Heads up.
100 Rapira Swedish Supersteel for about £8 delivered from trusted Russian Ebayer.
Premium blade. Pretty sharp but ever so smooth. Get them while you can... the Ruble is on its way up.

Been out of the whole DE buying scene for years, having found a set up that suits me.
Thought I'd start using up some old sample blades, so tonight used a Gillette Super Silver (orange writing on white envelope) Very good, smooth, forgiving blade - nicer and easier than my usual 7 o clock yellows.
Had a quick look on ebay and there don't appear to be any for sale, any of the regulars on this thread know a source (presume discontinued?)

I'm very new to the DE scene, and frankly I'm a scruffbag who thinks nothing of going 3 weeks without so much as a beard trim. But, I recently joined the RAF reserves which required a clean shave on parade first thing in the morning one weekend a month. I had this romantic idea in my head of getting up early and having a nice close baby smooth shave with my full travel kit in the block shared shower/toilets. All was going well until I realised I had 3 major bleeders and I'd knicked a mole which is usually not in the way.
Fast forward 2 hours later and I'm on parade, fielding questions about blade age and whether I've used a cut throat, from our flight sergeant Rock ape desperately trying not to bleed on his parade square.
I still enjoy a full blown DE shave at home but on training weekends it's a 2 minute job with the sensor excel and canned foam every time from now on! At least until I improve technique considerably.
Incidentally I mearned the reason for a close shave requirement is to form a good airtight seal on the reperator. So there's one good reason to shed the fluff.

Or you just wake up a few minutes earlier and don't rush Fast forward 2 hours later and I'm on parade, fielding questions about blade age and whether I've used a cut throat, from our flight sergeant Rock ape desperately trying not to bleed on his parade square.

Yep rushing and shaving is a poor combination.
I've been DE shaving for a few weeks now.I enjoy the ritual, but I think it's the shaving equivalent of driving a classic car. It doesn't give me a better shave, is more dangerous and takes longer.
When I am in a hurry I still use a Mach 3, get as good a shave in a fraction of the time and never cut myself (or get razor burn).

I am using Personna blades, which are OK aren't they?
People also seem to recommend multiple passes, which isn't necessary with a Mach 3.
When I use a Mach 3 and goo, I take huge sweeps down my face with impunity. I then feel for any remaining hairs and whisk them off without foam. It takes a fraction of the time DE shaving does.
As I said, I enjoy DE shaving but I don't think it gives a better shave and it certainly ain't quick.
You need to try different blades. What works for one person will not work for the next, I also used a plastic Gillette DE handle for 2 years and enjoyed the results finally moved to a Edwin Jaeger DE metal handle and it's just taken it up a whole new level really happy with the results and don't know why I held off for so long.

I find that difficult to believe.

From stepping out of the shower I can do 3 passes with a DE in 10 minutes. 10 minutes is hardly ages, especially when shaving becomes fun, rather than a chore.I am using Personna blades, which are OK aren't they?

The only way I could get a comparable close shave with a Mach 3 is to really push hard against the grain, and of course that results in irritation & also some ingrown hairs, neither of which I get using a DE razor.
It's horses for courses though. Some people will just be better off using a cartridge compared to a DE razor.

I emphasise, however, that I DO enjoy DE shaving and on days where I have time to myself I like doing it. It's a bit like why I like wearing an automatic watch, when a digital would do a better job.
