Multi-blade razors
Discussion
I'd forgotten about this thread.
Since seeing the light a few years ago I've settled down to a bog standard EJ DE89 & Gillette 7 o'clock SharpEdge blades. Stopped using the fancy pre- and post-shave creams, lotions and tonics a while back - just a decent sandalwood shave cream and brush and a good cold water rinse.
Recently began shaving scalp too; a smooth, shiny bonce is neater than the stubble/zero cut from the Wahl Balding I've used for years.

Hmm, yes. I use a straight razor, and was trying to persuade my boss of the financial savings (and much better shave!) until he asked how much my Dovo cost. Given that he's on the way to retirement, he didn't seem to think it would be worthwhile - partly as he has a gostee, and so doesn't shave to the same extent!
Surprise birthday present from my wife; a gorgeous resin brush made by Rodney Neep of Pens Of The Forest:
I haven't used the brush yet, but it is a thing of beauty to behold.

Could somebody recommend me some blades for use with an Edwin Jagger DE89?
Previously I had a Wilkinson Sword cheap DE and used Wilkinson Sword blades with it. Found it fine TBH. Upgraded to the DE89 and am finding the blades don't work very well. Have to press them quite hard onto the face which negates the benefits of DE for me.

Very personal thing - try personna and/or Gillette 7 o'clock sharpedge. They work well for me but you may find Feathers or something better suits you.
One or two online stores offer sample packs to try a few, but they tend to include some real rubbish as well as the better regarded blades.

Start with Personnas. See how you go, then ring the changes from that benchmark, I suggest.

I found a starter pack that lets you choose which blades you want included so I got those listed above, plus Astras which I've heard a few people talk about.Start with Personnas. See how you go, then ring the changes from that benchmark, I suggest.

I'd buy a selection pack and be prepared to throw out the dross. I've tried a few, Feathers are great but you have to be sooooo careful with them. Anything by Gillette is nice. Some that you've never heard of are surprisingly good, Dorco for example. I've ended up with God knows how many Shark blades, if I use 1 a week they will last for years. Sadly they are adequate but that's all.
What I like you may not. In fact for convenience I like a splash of oil and a disposable when I'm travelling, which is most weeks. I can't be bothered with all the paraphernalia in and out of a suitcase.

I went ahead and bought a futur. Brilliant piece of kit.
I had 7 day growth and had set it to 4 after following advice but at some point must have put it back to 1. Not as aggressive but still an excellent shave.
Also, i think i've found an excellent cream from a local company, Executive Shaving. They've recently got their own cream to market and although skeptical at first it's excellent. Try it out:

4?!!?!?!? You must have skin like sandpaper! I can go to 2.5, but even at that level I feel like I'm taking my epidermis off.
I noticed on amazon the other day that they had 25 'shark' razor blades for about 4 quid, so took a punt. I actually very impressed with my first use of them; feel like a feather without the excessive sharpness - gave me an excellent shave without the risk of bleeding to death. I'll see if I can get another couple of shaves out of one, and if so I'll order more.

Very nice... I have a few Neep brushes.I haven't used the brush yet, but it is a thing of beauty to behold.
Word of caution- do not leave it damp/wet in your wash bag. I damaged my favourite Neep brush when travelling by leaving it 'towel dry' in a travel tube.
Went to Turkish barber in Bath today for a head and face shave.
Really enjoyed the whole experience; lots of brushing which is surprisingly relaxing when someone else is doing it, feeling and hearing the straight razor doing its stuff, head/neck/shoulders/arms massage in the chair and of course the flicked flame on the ears.
The result was pretty good, but no better than I can get myself taking my time with a DE razor. I'd do it again though - thoroughly enjoyable.
