Handle yes, blade no. I've had to ditch a blade once when I forgot, and asked to do so by a TSA bod.

I've taken de razors in hand baggage including a couple of extra blades and never been stopped. I accept that if they're spotted they'll be confiscated.

Switched from Astra SP to Personna Platinum today and what a difference!

Still have a couple of small bits of face where I need to figure out which way the hair grows, but I'm perfectly happy with the results. Think I'll stay with these for a bit until I can work up the guts to try Feathers!

don't be scared, I don't think they are much different to Personna Platinums, I find the personnas more consistent though, had a few dull feathers from the packet.

That's crackers. How can they not spot these at security?

The 911 plane hijackers were only armed with Stanley type knives which are not much different.

Without wanting to go through 70 pages of posts can anyone reccomend razor blades that go on a Gilette fusion? I don't fancy spending money on their expensive 'fusion' razor blades. I only really want to get maybe 2-3 blades.

While I would like to get into using a safety razor I don't fancy spending money on one just yet. I don't really shave often, perhaps once every few months (I prefer to just use 0 on the electric trimmer). The current blade that I have on my fusion is all nasty, the aloe vera strip has warn away and even when using a pair of old jeans as a strop the blades feel like they're scratching at the skin rather then gliding.

thanks.

Don't spend lots on these fancy things...... Of the cheepies, I tried Sainsbury own and Tesco own, and both clogged with bristles and weren't great! What do I use now? Lidl's twin blade package consisting of a handle and 20 twin blade cartridges for under £4 and they work a treat.

For a £400 budget can someone recommend

DE Razor
Blades
Brush
Bowl
Soap
Towel?
Stand to hold blade/ brush
Aftercare
Anything else I need

I am determined to go DE.
I tried 20 odd years ago - but didn't have the patience.

This time round...I do.
I enjoy my barber shaving me every couple of weeks when I get my hair trimmed.

But I only want to spend the money once ( for non consumables obviously )
So.. I don't want to buy something.... to replace it some months later.

Thank you for your input.

Yes, don't spend 400 straight off the bat. Get an EJ89, some Feather and Personna blades, a Poraso tub of soap of your choice and a basic boar brush. You'll be closer to 50 than a hundred and will have lots left to make an informed choice in a month or several.smile

£400.
Jeez!
If you're determined to make DE shaving as least cost-effective as possible then I would suggest researching high mountain badger brushes. Otherwise you'll be sadly disappointed at how innefective DE shaving is as a means of impressing acquaintances with spending power.

If you ever come near the Godalming area, I can lend you a load of razors to try.... You need a badger brush:

Feather razor blades:

And either soap or cream... I prefer soap:

The choice of razor is very much a personal thing... as I say, I can lend you a few models to try.

I've just ordered this as I have heard Mühle do a really good synthetic fibre brush so wanted to try it out.

I'm also debating whether or not to get a Merkur Futur as well as having an adjustable DE razor is quite appealing.

I use one. Very different to natural fibre - you can/should use a lot of pressure to get a lather. Indestructible, can't kill mine, still looks like new.

Agree with this, though I'd push the boat out and spend a few quid on an alum block too. In a month or several your informed choice will probably be to stick with your original purchases.

I use a Futur and highly recommend it.

OTOH I found it way too bulky and sold mine!

The Muhle synthetics are great though. Just remember to keep it well splayed whilst lathering your face. You can be a bit rougher with it in this regard than a badger brush.

The Futur and Mühle brush arrived last week courtesy of Amazon. I'm very impressed with both. The weight of the Futur seems perfect and it is great being able to adjust the blade. I'm on setting two at the moment which seems to give a good result on a one pass shave. For a two pass shave I might try dialing it up higher for pass one and then going to a lower setting for the second.

Here's my latest purchase. It is brand new which makes it about 80 years younger than the rest of the collection...

Any guesses as to what it is?
