Cheers guys. Have looked at some of the safety razors linked on here a few times, and they do look pretty good. Plus, the blades seem a hell of a lot cheaper than what you'd pay for Gillette or the equivalent these days.

I'll watch some of the tutorials and think this may be something I ask for this year.

The Merkur Futur looks sweet smile
As i said earlier in the thread, get the el cheapo one from boots first, try it and see if you like it, and can get on with it, if you can, then by all means by the shiny stuff then. Seems silly to buy a merkur, expensive soap and a massive blade bundle, if you cant get on with it. Besides, if you buy the el cheapo one from boots, you get about 10 shaves out of it to find out if you can get on with it
Very good advice, many thanks slopes. I'll have a ganders at the vids on Ewetewb later too and see what's what.

Thanks for the info guys.
Mrs slopes got me a cheap razor, some blades, a brush and soap in a bowl from boots for less than £15, and the only thing i have used lots of, is the blades, the soap isnt even half way through yet. Also, invest in a good facecloth, which should be soaked in hot water and placed on your face, do this 3 or 4 times and it softens the hairs up lovely, which makes shaving that bit easier. Remember to use cold water after, it closes the pores back up so no dirt gets in them

The only problem with the cheap razor is they are st compared to the good, more expensive razors. So if you think, actually that shave isn't bad, then invest in a better razor and you'll see how much better the more expensive ones are.

An example of this is my Wilkinson Sword Safety compared to the Murker Futur, the WS one is about a third of the weight so I have to apply force myself and also the blades don't stick out as far so it's a bit more awkward to shave with it.

True, they wont be the best, but as a way to find out if a safety razor is for you, its a pretty cheap way of finding that out. When the funds allow it, then a merkur it will be, along with some nice bits and bobs to accompany it.

I used to have trouble with wet shaving - rash, burning, ingrowing hairs etc. All solved by shaving in the shower. No soap, cream, foam etc. just a a cheap disposable with a lubricating strip. Mach 3's are nice used this way too.

Fair play if you get good results with a disposable type, but for me they dont compare to a safety razor, so i will stick with mine thanks

The Gillette razors are by far the best if in a rush and want/need a great shave in a hurry. Have used all varaiants from Countour to Proglide and rate them highly.

When I have time the "pamper shave regime" has no substitute. The feel and noise of such a shave is on a different level. Those that can achieve in minutes - I salute you, as it takes me ages to prepare face/skin, actual shave is slower (maybe I am a "scaredey cat"), post shave washes, alum, powder, etc

One thing that many seem to forget is that skin type and actual hair thickness effect the shave and results. Eg. I cannot get more than 3 good shaves out of a decent DE blade, whereas as others claim 5-7 shaves.

Those that suffer from "barbers rash" should try the safety razor approach with decent brush/soap and chemical-enhanced-free products.....you will see the difference.

True, but it also depends on being a bit anal about looking after your blades - using both sides equally, rinsing the blade properly after shaving, and making sure you turn it over after every shave. If you are only getting 3 shaves out of a decent blade, then you are Chewbacca AICMFP.

I agree that type of facial hair makes a difference, mine is hard & bristly & yet a fusion 5 blader lasts me over a month despite shaving 6 days a week & would probably last longer but it starts to drag or takes longer. So around 2 quid for a month which is about 8.5 pence per shaving day. I use king of shaves blue tube jobby, life is too short to bugger around with old bristle brushes & D/E razors.

Is there a specific way to shave with a safety razor, or a particular method? I've never used one before, but i frequently get bad shaving rash and am pissed off with spending a fortune on gillete cartridges.

It has probably been asked before, but only occured to me to ask now as I've seen it talked about quite a bit recently.
Snowy Slopes has covered it earlier in the thread, it's basically about getting the angle of the blade against the skin right.

Lather up using a good brush and soap and put the razor on your face so the handle is about 15 degrees down from horizontal then move the razor down your cheek and rotate the handle down over until you hear/feel it start to cut the hair. That is the angle you need.

I shave once with the hair (same direction that the hair lies on your face/neck) then lather up and once across the hair. On this second pass I also find that if I get some of the lather on my hand and then where I have shaved across the hair, rub my finger tips across the skin, pulling it tight after the razor has passed and feel for any hair protruding, it will cover the hair with lather again and I can then shave that bit of stubble off. Does that make sense?

If you really want to, do a third pass against the hair, but I find the second pass is enough. The shave lasts me about a day and a half to two days then shave again on the third and I've never had rash/burn since changing to a safety.

ETA. I've just bought this http://connaughtshaving.com/mitchellsbowl.html

this (I think) http://connaughtshaving.com/vulfix403.html

and this is for Christmas http://connaughtshaving.com/merkurfutur.html

Used connaughts a few times. went from a mach 3 to Merkur 34 and never looked back. 40 blades for £8 and lasted me over a year. better shave and cheaper. just take 5 mins more when shaving to save cutting anyting off

I hated using those stupid five blade things, far to bulky & couldn't even shave little bits like just under the nose because of the sheer size of the bloody razor.

I've gone back to twin disposable Wilkinson Sword jobs & find they are near perfect - although probably helped by the fact that I (nearly always) either shave in the sauna, or just after a sauna. No shave foam, no soap, just a cup of cold water & a razor, no mirror either. Best shave you can get.

I am considering going for the traditional badger brush & straight blade shave though.

If you do it properly, look up the tutorial videos on youtube, then a wet shave with a safety razor is just the best, and works out cheaper in the long run. If you do look after your blades, and prepare properly etc etc, then the feeling afterwards is one of, how the hell di i shave that close, and not cut anything, or end up with razor burn?? Or it is for me anyway

"Loss leader" marketing by Gillette IMO. They sell the handles for a loss (or possibly very little profit now) and make their money on the razor blades which have a 4750% mark up.

Not one to read the mail but:

Something I frequently mention on these threads is Gillette can afford to use the most expensive sportsmen in the world to advertise their gear, must be quite the earner!

A recent Which? survey praised Gillette's products but gave a 'Best Buy' rating to the King of Shaves Azor. Its four cartridge refill pack comes in at a much cheaper £4.88.
I use the King of Shaves Azor razor, shave blind in the shower with the King of Shaves gel. If I really want a close shave I use the face scrub first.

Ill take the pepsi challenge with a cut throat or safty razor any day of the week.

Got a 5 bladed job a couple of weeks ago, think its a fusion (has a white handle).

Actually really like it, i use some gel type stuff which lathers up a bit and then use some nivea after shaving cream type stuff?

Would love to try the safety razor approach but i just can't be bothered with it all, i probably shave once or twice a week, at which stage its quite long, the five blader does a great job so far.

I am blessed in that I don't really grow facial hair, more bum fluff, so its tesco value razors for me - 10 pack for 24p.

I nearly fell over when I saw a pack of razor blades in sainsburys was £19.99 the other day..

A safety will destroy a cartridge with a bi-weekly shave! A buddy of mine took my "you can't clog them" challenge to a whole new level! 13 days growth! No clogs!

Funnily enough I just had a shave with a freebie Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 something or other (why do they give them such retarded names?). Way better than the gillette Fusion despite feeling cheap and nasty. I think it's actually because it's less effective than the gillette it's not irritating the skin as much (?)

I shalln't be replacing my proper razor with it that's for sure.
