What page is there a list of stuff I need to shave properly?
I use disposables at the min but good ones and previously used vibrating multi blade. I am assuming I am missing something?!

I have bought a few recently, a fatboy, red tip, an aristocrat, a black beauty (x2) and a couple of techs. All well worth using and provide great shaves, to be honest I prefer them over my Futur.

Hi guys, new to this thread...
I'm getting sick of buying blades for generic branded supermarket stuff (Gillette mach45828 multi blade stuff) at a cost of £12 per pack of 4 or something, and even with fresh blades on I get multiple ingrown hairs and rashes, very frustrating..
I'm using a brush and soap dish (nothing fancy I'll admit) but I feel it's the blade set up that's letting me down..
Is it possible to get something for a beginner to fancy stuff type razor for £20 or thereabouts?

I've been dealing with Executive Shaving in Glasgow, very helpful people who know their subject incredibly well. Got it on ebay. Arrived in just over a week from the US, there loads more over there than there is here. As for refurbed im not sure, I dont think it is, just very good condition. On the subject of condition. How do you guys keep your razors clean? I cant seem to keep mine nice and shiney without taking a toothbrush to it after every shave.

I'm not sure on cleaning, some sites suggest a bowl of boiling water for 10 mins after 10 blades.

Is it possible to get something for a beginner to fancy stuff type razor for £20 or thereabouts? wilkinson sword black plastic jobbie is about £4-5 at decent supermarkets or chemists etc , plenty good enough to see if you like it the supplied blades seem decent , then you can try a sample pack from ebay to see what suits you best

This sample pack is £9.60 for 60 blades. You will get 2 or 3 shaves from a blade. Possibly more but you will need to see what works for you. http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.htmlConnaught have a few razors for under £10 but something like this Timor at £15 will give you a good start. http://connaughtshaving.com/timorsatin.htmlNot bad for the same price as 8 Mach 3 blades. Stick with your current brush and soap, but you will at some point want to upgrade. I'm amazed at the difference a better brush makes to getting a good lather.

Much as it goes against the grain, so to speak, I think the varied sample packs are a waste of time and money for new starters. You are busy refining technique and it's as much a test of the person shaving as the blade.
I'd start with something like Astra or Personna and just use those for a few months. After sorting out technique aim to give the Feathers a go. If it's a bloodbath, then try again 6 months later. Don't keep swapping any other shaving paraphernalia during the process.

I would suggest starting with feathers and sticking with them for a few months.
I don't understand the fear they seem to generate. they are the best blades out there and therefore cause less irritation and a better shave.
all blades will cut you if you go wrong

Maybe, but I'm not convinced they are 3x as good as personnas as they are 3x the price.
A sample pack is a pretty cheap way of making your own mind up!

A sample pack is a pretty cheap way of making your own mind up! Once I tried feathers I've not used anything else since. Used with a Merkur 38C. Last time I saw Personas in my local supermarket they were £2+ for 10 blades. Although a single pack of feathers maybe comparatively expensive if you have to pay postage, the last lot I bought was in bulk, 10 packs of 10 for £24, should last at least 12 months. IMHO not excessive for over a years worth of blades. I was buying other stuff at the time so got free postage. http://www.shaving-shack.com/10-feather-hi-stainle...

I'm not sure on cleaning, some sites suggest a bowl of boiling water for 10 mins after 10 blades. The aristocrat is really good. I bought it in a average state and have sent it off for replating. My version is basically a slim adjustable in gold. I used it a few times and had some very comfortable shaves shaves with it. I'd recommend it.

I agree they are good, but I got 10 packs of personna reds for £9. IMO a complete bargain for a years worth of blades!

Hi all Been reading this thread on and off for some months now and I've decided enough is enough...I'm buying a safety razor starter kit. I'm sick to death of my multi blade cartridges. I've tried the lot at great expense. The latest being the buzzing Fusion. Sir Chris is a lying b d...they're s t. f king b ksing s te...even against the f king grain. So going for a Merkur starting kit from here http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk/mall/departmen...Can I ask you experienced guys if you use pre-shave oils and if so which ones would you recommend ? Obviously I know everyone is different..but I really think I could do with one of these. Had an old fashioned hot towel shave before my wedding last year - guy used one then and it felt/smelt great. Also alum blocks - any favourites? Cheers all.

Just clogged the razor and helped stick the whiskers to the sink making it harder to clean off. Alum blocks are all natural and shouldn't vary. I made the mistake of buying a more expensive Osma one over the cheaper ones, they are all the same in my experience.

I also re-apply this before each pass, as I had real bother with razor burn and through trial and error have found this has eliminated it altogether, dear though. Any alum block will do.
