But look at Ian Tang's eBay store to buy direct from China with superb quality and service. Also the Vulfix 404 is a brilliant all round brush that is perfect for beginners.

Got a link anywhere for a cheap alum bloc?
Connaught shaving do a 100g block for £1.90 as a single, or 5 for £6.

Razor. Good choice. Best all round beginner razor and good enough to last a lifetime.
Proraso cut healing gel. Waste of money.
Proraso pre shave cream. I bought one of these. Can't see the point. Your stubble, dry, is as strong as copper wire. Waterlogged it loses over 80% of its strength. So just make sure your stubble is wet for about 3 minutes before shaving and life will be much easier. Shaving after a shower is ideal.
Osma bloc. Very good idea and very effective. You can buy alum blocks very cheap on eBay. Only use when absolutely necessary as they contain aluminium.
ToBS shaving cream. Fabulous stuff, they have reformulated these to take out the parabens. Best value of the traditional London grooming suppliers. Go to the shop and try the other flavours. Eton College and Avocado are my favourites.
Jagger brush. OK to start with. But look at Ian Tang's eBay store to buy direct from China with superb quality and service. Also the Vulfix 404 is a brilliant all round brush that is perfect for beginners.

All IMHO, of course.

OK. List revised to delete cut healing gel and buy the ebay alum block. I'll also delete the pre shave cream.

OK, so bought the alum block from ebay and reduced my list but just realised that i have no pre/post shave (other than the alum block).

should i get something for before / after? Being aware that a good soak before starting is probably all i need to do?

Hot water/shower is all you need pre-shave.
Alum block, trumpers skin food and tabac or similar for the full-on luxury feel.

Nb. Cold rinse off alum, apply skin food to damp face, let almost dry then post-shave balm/cream.

Cool. This is getting expensive! Basket already at £61 before i add skin food and post shave balm.

Also i've decided to dance with the devil and added these:

Proraso pre shave cream is good and only about £6 a tub which lasts ages. Can also use it post shave too.

Just ordered a Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Classic, along with a few other things (its amazing how easy it is to spend money!).

Fed up of paying £15/£20 for blades, £3 for 10 if I get on with it smile.
Thought I would give a bit of an update from when I got this at the end of June.

Still going strong, takes no time at all to get a decent shave now. And more importantly, I think I've saved the money I spent on everything already. I've just opened my second packet of 5 blades.

Not bad, 5 blades in 4 months, normally 5 blades in a month with the other types!

I can go longer without shaving and it doesn't hurt still. Before 2 or 3 days without shaving and it would rip it out, now going a week isn't a problem at all.

Glad I did it now.

My current favourite blade, made by PPI in Russia:

Exceptionally sharp, very long lasting and incredibly smooth. One of the few blades that feels good on a fully opened out Mergress.
Last at least twice as long as a Feather.

These were considered to be the very best by most of the traditional shaving community:

Made in the same PPI factory but now discontinued. There is still stock around, at a price, but there are lots of Chinese fakes. I have a few hundred real ones and use them sparingly.

I was sceptical about the Proraso healing gel but went for it and have been quite impressed, certainly in comparison to a styptic pencil. I love the Trumpers skin food but it is a luxury, the only real issue I would have with Serendipity's recommendations is the 7 O'clocks, I didn't get on with them at all, but as I only used one out of the pack for a couple of days I will give them a second chance. I have a pretty normal beard growth and get 4 shaves out of a feather, change over day tomorrow.

Something i've just thought about is disposing of these blades. For a cartridge i'd just bin it but I guess it's a bit of a problem for the open blades. Do you guys just put the blades in an old pack or something?

They slide into the back of the original case they're supplied in, pretty safe and simple.

I snap mine in half and wrap in tissue and place in the bin.
