Hi,

Thought I'd jump in on this.
Not hairy and usually only shave twice a week but always seem to suffer from ingrown hairs and subsequent spots.

Have had a look at the wiki. I'm too lazy to go sourcing things separately, would this be a good start point? Seems to have good reviews.

Only dissappointment is no stand. How should I store razor and brush without one?

Looks a cheap introduction, and you may be okay. I wouldn't buy one of those products though, even for the low price and convenience.
As for brushes, they're fine either way up. Just make sure it's thoroughly rinsed and at least drip dry before putting it away.

I don't have a stand either, I just place the razor down on a clan surface and the brush stands up next to it (i.e. bristles in the air).

I should probably invest in one, but this method has seen zero issues smile

Throw the f-king useless WS blades away and buy something sharp & smooth. smile
I find the Wilkos to be just about my favourites, to be honest.
Blimey - I assume that you've tried something sharp and smooth like Rapira Platinum, Laser Ultra or Feathers, then?
Didn't rate Lasers at all. Feathers are good for one shave, but crap for the next one. Wilkos 99% as good for ten shaves in a row.

To be fair, my all time favourite are the Personas that are only available in the States.

Which ones?

I use these Persona Platinum Chrome. Very comfortable, very sharp and good for 3-4 shaves.

Those white plastic dispenser ones are know as Barbers. Most people think they are inferior to Personna Lab Blues/Med Prep but I really liked them.
I agree that Platinum Chromes are also a great blade.

Still dip in and out of this thread since going for a proper razor a while ago. Still enjoying it.

Anyway, not being very well organised, I've not got round to ordering a job lot of blades from anywhere.

Today I realised I've run out of what I did have, so headed down the high street to pick some up before our holiday.

All the shops round here appear to have stopped selling them! Not Boots, independent pharmacies, barbers, Wilkinsons (where I know I've bought them before). Is this a corporate and social responsibility thing, like not selling x amount of paracetamols to people to stop them self harming? Do they not sell enough to warrant stocking them? Is there a cartel run by Gillette et al putting pressure on the big chains to only stock the hepta-blade cartridge thingies?

All said and done, I guess I'll just have to hit t'internet and sort it out after a few days growth.

Christ, I'm glad you corrected that, my blood ran cold at the thought of a feather in a futur at 6.

I had one in at 3 and it was lethal.

I rarely run above 2; 2 1/4 for some less aggressive blades.
Turns out I was using it on 6! No wonder I found chunks of my face in the sink! Back to 1 now and it's a doddle!

Which bit of Derbyshire are you in as I know a few places that sell them. Sainsburys and Tesco certainly did last time I visited and I know at least two chemisits that do (along with other kit).

Belper, so a trip to Ripley Sainsburys isn't out of the question, just a PITA when we're going away tomorrow.

Rumour has it that Superdrug has some, I'll try there when I remember.

It was more a question as to why so many don't seem to carry them any more.

Probably 'our' own fault. The few of us who are reviving the dark arts typically buy on t'interwebs. I suspect, barring the specialists, the High Street rarely gets any demand for DE kit.

Profit margin, a pack of DE blades for £2 -v- a pack of lubricated vibrating six blade doufreys for £15+.

Well, bits arrived from yesterday. Couldn't wait and had my first shave last night.
Had been in shower so went straight to lather stage. Struggled a bit to get it as foamy as I thought it should be. Was just rubbing the brush on the end of the soap bar.

Shave seemed to go ok, no cuts. Noticed I'd missed a few bits on lower neck this morning but overall seems ok. Struggling to get the correct angle for the blade at times.

Feels a pretty clean shave.

Try applying soap stick direct to face and work up lather with wet brush. Will try to find geofatboy's video later.

ETA: here - youtube.

Try using a small bowl and putting the stick sideways inside, you can allow it to soak in some water for a day or so and it will easily squash down into the bowl like a normal bowl soap and then lathering is easier, I lather in a separate mug myself and then apply to my face when it is of the correct consistency. I use a palmolive stick as my standard soap and do what I describe above in a smaller shaving soap bowl.

On a different note I managed to pick up a 114 yr old cut throat from an antique shop in Cirencester today and it is almost shave ready, a small stropping should see her right and see me embarking on a new chapter in vintage shaving!
