Looks a nice razor would like to here how you get on with it as For the past 2 years I've been using a cheap plastic DE handle. Plus a pack of blades delivered each month for a year nice.

Any idea which blades they send out with this?

Quite tempted to give it a go.

Looks nice, but a little pricey to me, especially as the head is an unknown quantity.

if you spot any on ebay and want me to take a look before bidding, I'd be happy to do so.
You don't honestly expect any of us to fall for that do you? biggrin

Actually yes.... I am done with collecting Slims, Fatboys, Aristocrats and Toggles. I have a good collection and I'm not sure I could find any that would eclipse what I already have. I still look occasionally but haven't bought for a long while.

Looks interesting. Handle stainless but head cast in India.

Nipped to cardiff earlier and picked this up as they have a 25% sale on smile

Had a nice badger brush from SWMBO for Christmas so will give it a go tomorrow! Wish me luck! Pretty nervous about using a straight razor first time!

What blade would you recommend first time? Personna Platinum, Gillette silver blue / 7 o clock or risk it with my last feather! The feather scares the piss out of me tbh!!

Looking for some advice in what seems to be a market with too much choice!

I maintain my stubble using a beard trimmer and currently use a relatively bog standard razor to shape my cheeks. I use my electric razor for my neck but I've been getting stubble rash recently which would suggest I will need to replace the blades and foil for the first time in two years!

This got me thinking about buying a really good quality razor to do both areas. Would a 'cut throat' design be a good option or should I go for a more traditional type? I wouldn't want to spend more than £50 unless there is something significantly better for not much more. I am also keen to move away from the traditional shaving foam so would be interested in what I could use for my *quite sensitive* skin - any recommendations would be appreciated. I'll continue to back track through the many posts on this thread but if anyone could point me in the direction of a good quality razor I'd be grateful.

Thanks,

Martin

How do you define 'sensitive skin'? I reckon it's hogwash made up by marketing types to sell 'special' products.
Rash is probably down to your choice of weapon and lubricant.
Switching to DE safety razor and proper soap/cream and brush will likely eliminate the issue.
Any half decent razor and good blade combo will shave you closer and cause less irritation when performed properly, check youtube for geofatboy and mantic59 for some excellent tutorials.
Mühle R89 razor is cheap, Personna red blades widely recommended, best/super badger brush and a nice shave cream. I'd add an alum block and styptic pencil to treat/staunch the nicks you'll inevitably make while re-learning how to shave. smile
It'll take a little longer when you start out, taking two or three passes but it really is worth it.
Razor rash/burn, ingrowing hairs, spots, etc. a thing of the past!
Once you've gotten the hang of it maybe switch up to a more aggressive head/razor for an even closer shave/experience.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. As I say, I now maintain stubble but when I used to shave, my skin would sting, bleed and be blotchy even when using the likes of a Gillette razor.

I'll have a look at your recommendations but I was wondering if it would be worthwhile looking at something from the following range:

http://www.tayloroldbondst.co.uk/acatalog/razors.h...

edit: having just read your reply properly and looked at the hyperlinks, I see most of the razors in my link are of a different type.

With regard to the DE razor you recommend, is there anything significantly better under the £50 mark or is it really down to the actual blade I choose to use?

Also, is cream the best option or would a shaving gel be equally as good?

The razor matters as much as every other element. Spending more doesn't get you more.

The razors in your suggestion Taylor's... hyperlink all accept a standard gillet mach whatever razor head and therefore cost the same to run and give no appreciable improvement over those you can buy in a supermarket.

I would buy something like this:

http://www.shaving-shack.com/merkur-510-chrome_pro...

Partnered with Feather blades - which are widely regarded as the best.

Shaving cream (in a tub, not a can), a decent brush and you'll be good to go. I use hard soap and a brush - which I find better than cream. Gel is hopeless.

Remember to shave immediately after a shower (or make sure your face is warm and wet), use short strokes and zero pressure -let the weight of the razor alone shave you. Change blades after 3 shaves.

Report back!

You could always dab to cut with a styptic pencil. Ok it'll sting like mad for a few seconds, but it's surprising how well they stop the bleeding.

Thanks for this. The only problem with me using cream would be the difficulty in shaping my cheek stubble - hence the reason I'm thinking clear gel would be better for me. Will certainly take on board your razor suggestion however - I'm hoping to buy one asap.
