I have been using an Edwin Jagger DE89 for over a year now, no complaints at all and it is an excellent shave.

Personna Platinum blades work the best with it I find.

I may be rather late to the party but could someone suggest a decent razor for me?

I'm currently using Wilkinson sword hydro5 razor and have generally been pretty happy with it, but of course there will always be significantly better. Just want a nice close shave smile

I'd be rather weary of using a straight blade with no training etc before hand, I might end up nipping my carotid hehe

Cheers
Start with this - it's perfectly good, costs about £3 from Boots and will get you hooked. Then the madness can begin hehe

Shave factory first razor that comes up is this

As it's a butterfly type razor have you got the blade installed correctly? I know with my only experience of a butterfly type razor it's not as easy to setup up as a three piece.
Thanks, a bit more tweaking was required, now i think it is just the technique that needs improving; overall a good shave, just a few bits on the more difficult contours to improve on.

I thought I would provide a quick update. I've been traditional shaving for about 6 months now and thoroughly enjoy it. I also get virtually no shaving irritation which is great. I'm delighted with the Mühle R89 razor and M89 brush and don't see myself changing to anything else anytime soon. As for razor blades, I'm using Feathers at the moment and, after a few painful nicks, have learned a fairly healthy respect for them! I have also used Astra Platinum blades and got on quite well with those. I've experimented with a few different shaving soaps and creams and now use Taylor of Old Bond Street (I really like their coconut shaving cream) most of the time, apart from when I am traveling when I use Proraso's Eucalyptus and Menthol shaving cream. I'm also using Proraso's pre-shave cream which I find helps quite a lot. I did use pre-shave oil but just didn't get on with it.

So in summary, I'm loving the new experience and can't ever see myself going back.

Thanks for that. It seems daft I spend a lot on elemis shaving foam (individually over £20 a can rrp) and also their post shave recovery mask (which costs even more!) and I use a very basic blade....

Don't mind spending a bit of something worth it. Ever since I've been using the elemis stuff it makes me realise just how crap the Nivea or Gillette stuff it hehe

Looks a nice razor would like to here how you get on with it as For the past 2 years I've been using a cheap plastic DE handle. Plus a pack of blades delivered each month for a year nice.

It looks and feels lovely but I havent used it yet!
When i do I will post up a report.
Not over impressed with the Shark blades when I tried them before but we will see.
Finally started using this razor, I really dont like the Shark blades but otherwise I do really like the razor, the Alloy head is very solid feeling, it feels really good quality. The stainless body is very heavy but overall the razor is good, a bit more aggressive than the Parker I have used for the last couple of years. I think I will go back to my Personna blades and i think it will be a good combo.

Nice one.
You may like to try a more aggressive head for the R89. Thanks to someone here I now switch between the standard R89 and the Breaveheart heads. For me I use sharp blades like feather or personna reds in the standard head and a more general purpose blade like a gillette 7 o'clock sharpedge in the braveheart.

If I start looking at some of these single blade razors.... Do these give closer shaves than multi blade razors? Am I likely to shred my face up? hehe

I'd say they give a closer shave. They may not suffers fools as well as the multiblade razors. Treated sensibly they won't produce a scene from Dexter.

Thanks chaps. Are most of these purchased online? Can someone recommend me a half decent one? I see some are approaching 3 figures, I don't want to spend that much but 40-50 of so would be ok....

Cheers!

You're better off starting with something like the Wilkinson sword one linked above, or if you want to spend more, the R89, or a Merkur 34 HD, so you can learn the technique on something a little forgiving before you move to a more aggressive razor.

And yes, you can get them all online.

I'd say go with a DE89. Makes wet shaving ridiculously easy.

Am I right to assume that the Mühle R89 and EJ DE89 variations are the same razor/head design but with slightly different handles?

ETA Can anyone confirm they have the same thread?

Thanks guys. How many shaves do you typically get out of one of the blades?

I get about 4. One per edge, flip the blade over. Sometimes just a couple, depending on how I feel. At about 10p a blade, you can afford to use a blade a shave, with the finest scented unguents and still save on cartridge shaving.

4 shaves.
I don't think flipping a razor blade makes any difference at all since it's the same fine edge being used. Also, if you flip the blade after each shave you're multiplying the chances of something bad happening by handling the blade 3 or 4 times as much as us non-flippers. biggrin
