Have to say the razor is great. Not used an open comb before and while this is a hybrid-stylee affair it's pretty aggressive but a very close shave was achieved with no effort or drama.

Mühle R41 Grande
That's a beast!
More aggressive than a Gillette Old Type apparently....

Now my new job demands clean shaven every day I'm currently blowing stupid money on those fancy smanchie million blade Gillette's, I only used to shave 3 times a week, sun, tues, thurs at the old job.

So was thinking Muhle R41 but the reviews make it very plain its not for newbies

reviews are point me towards the Muhle R89 as a quality beginner blade

also £9.99 for a 50 pack of feather blades is way cheaper than the Gillette's

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream

already got a brush

sound good ?

yes
Yep - sounds perfect to me - pretty much exactly what I started with.

You may now expect/enjoy many differing opinions. hehe

May I beg to differ already...

EJ89 to start - mildish, safer, less likely to result in a face/sink interface smile

IMHO you can't go wrong with the R89 as it is pretty easy to use.

You might want to consider something a little less aggressive than the Feathers to start off with as (again IMO) they can be somewhat unforgiving if you aren't careful. Possibly try something like the Astra Superior Platinum blades.

The TOBS Sandalwood Shaving Cream is a good start. I find their luxury coconut shaving cream is also very good and helps give a good close shave.

Don't forget an Alum block as you will almost certainly cut yourself a few times as you start out.

Mühle R41 Grande
You've got me looking at the R41 now! Very tempting...

Do you plan on shaving every day with it?

I shave every weekday and once at the weekend.
Have used it yesterday and today. Loving it. Way more aggressive than my R89 and also has the edge on the braveheart head too.
I think I'd go for the standard handle were I buying again though - not only is the Grande long, it's quite a bit thicker and heavier.

Apart from being comparatively expensive, what's different? No mention of the head make/type which is the important part.

I found the Taylor's sandalwood cream smelled amazing but I could never get a good shave out of it. Razor never seemed to glide well with it at all.

If you find yourself not getting on with it give shaving soap a go. Lots of people rate it highly though so you may be fine smile

I just liked the look of it, and it seems quality. Although now I notice they've updated the page to say the head is made in India...

Somebody buys the head for a couple of quids, mills a handle, puts it in a box and Bob is indeed. Doesn't make it a bad razor, mind, just notable that head and handle are mismatched in finish.

I thought I'd give this safety razor lark a try, but I've been unable to find one in a shop. Tried Boots, Saintsbury's, Super Drug, Wilko and Tesco! And they weren't small branches either. Found the blades in some of the shops, but no razors frown

Looks like I'll have to order one online, which will mean buying more stuff to make the postage charge worthwhile wink

I got mine in boots. However I have now upgraded to Edwin Jagger made in Sheffield http://www.edwinjagger.co.uk and free P&P I have this one: http://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/Razors/Traditional+DE... which is a DE89 it also comes with a pack of 5 blades, I get most of my blades from the shops you've listed purely as I've always avoided the Internet and preferred actually going to a shop.

I have recently upgraded my trusty Giesen & Forsthoff Timor razor to an EJ89 and what a revelation, much better closer shave. I picked mine up from Amazon as the knurled version was out of stock at Edwin Jagger. Do miss the butterfly mechanism though.
