So. All new shave this morning. New Muhle R41 with feathers. Really was a it of a technique test coming from a DE89 which was rather more forgiving.

Anyway, after checking that the local hospital had plenty of my blood group in stock i got on with it. Couple of nicks here and there that saw me break out the alum block for the first time in a wee while but other than that all good. Oh, and i tried ToBS Almond cream. Loving that too.

Took a pic of me after i'd finished:

R41 best kept for non-hangover mornings. hehe
I daren't use it every day but for 'special' occasions nothing gets closer. Great bit of kit.

My R41 is my daily, is this the shaving equivalent of commuting in a caterham?

I've just paid to have a cut throat shave.

Best thing I've ever done.

This thread seems a bit quiet!

Looking for some pointers...

I have been using a plastic handle W-Sword razor with WS blades and standard Gillette foam for a couple of years.

The razor is fit for replacement, but more importantly I'm falling out of love with the blades I have been buying, could do with a slightly closer shave.

This is obviously an opportunity for a full kit replacement! Anyone want to impart some wisdom?

I started with the plastic WS razor in spring 2015, then tested a dozen different blades and a few soaps/gels. It was a revelation and I was hooked.

After much testing I found (and YMMV):

My preferred blade: Rapira Super Stainless.
My preferred soap: Proraso Red (or Green on a hot day as it's nice and cooling).

Fast forward to June, when I bought an Edwin Jagger DE89L. It controls the blade so much better, the heavier weight works intuitively and the warmth of the metal feels great. The WS is now consigned to my travel bag.

I've just finished the blue beards revenge post shave balm that came with my starter set up. Any recommendations for something else to try otherwise I might just get some more of the same? Although tempted by the Bond Street sandal wood gel.

Also not enjoying the brush that came with the starter set as I'm finding the bristles are constantly shedding? Again recommendations for a replacement?

The Jagger brushes are very good. The Simpson I paid a fair bit for was losing bristles daily but the Jagger is as hirsute as it ever was.
I don't use any pre or post-shave products do can't help on other questions. Sorry.

After having yet another bout of ingrown hairs on my face I need to do something different, DE shaving seems to be the way to go. Have spent a bit of time reading through this thread and it seems that for a begineer a DE89 is the best to start with, http://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/edwin-jagger-chrome-k... any tips on what brush and cream would be a good starting point?

The EJ brushes are also good, I have a best badger one from them. The EJ creams are also pretty good maybe they do a package deal?. I like Taylors of old bond street creams more though..

Don't forget a selection of blades and some alum or styptic pencil.

I started DE shaving for the same reason, and it helped a lot. Just map your hair direction (everyone is different) and go with and across the grain only..

Can't recommend my Muhle V2 synthetic enough. I face lather & this is a beast. I probably get +50% more lather out of creams as opposed to before & haven't touched my badger brushes for months. In fact, I sold a couple of my old brushes as they are redundant now.

Would something like this be a good starter, assume I need a DE Shaver, blades, brush, shaving cream, styptic pencil, that cover it?

sure, looks good if you didn't fancy an animal hair brush. Only other thing you might want is a bowl to lather in, although not necessary as you can hand or face lather instead. But if you fancied a bowl there are lots of options or just use an old mug!

Synthetics are more suited to lathering on the face as they hold less water and have a bit more "body" than naturals.

http://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/edwin-jagger-de-starter-kit.html has a badger brush which from listening to the tips here http://sharpologist.com/shaving-videos seems to be the preferred material to use, would that be right?

As above, I think a quality synthetic lathers on face better. In bowl badger has it. Pays yer money etc.
