Ok, how do you lot pronounce "chlorine"?

(It is pronounced "klor-reen" btw.)
Obviously. How else have you heard it pronounced?

And how do you all pronounce "deteriorate"?

Say it out loud to yourself a couple of times.

Do you make the "OR" sound or do you leave it out?

The latter seems to be fairly common practice these days.

"Chloryne" and "Uryne". Well-educated people, too.

Apparently when Europe composed the lyrics to the final countdown, they were originally heading to Uranus (rather than Venus), but the BBC News presenters' pro-nun-see-ation ruling body had yet to decree it was actually your-in-us, and they were worried that any unfortunate misinterpretation might affect USA record sales, much like Queen bombed after the I want to break free video cross-dressing upset.

As it is written. Dee-teerior-ate.

My driver's mate - a constant source of grammatical and pronunciation fun - came out with a really good one last week.

We were delivering in Corby and I'd negotiated the lorry to where the Sat Nav had sent me, but needed to ascertain the exact address.

"What are we looking for?"

"10 Iz-lay Walk."

"Iz-lay?"

"Yeah, Iz-lay."

"Do you mean 'Islay'?"

"No, it's 'Iz-lay'".

"It's pronounced 'Eye-lay' Paul."

"Then why did they put an 's' in it?"

"I don't know. You'd have to ask the people of Islay about that."

I knew a lady once who flew to Spain on a Vickers VIZcount (it was a long time ago).

My next door neighbour used to talk about the "morbage" her daughter had taken out when she bought her first house.

It's in the "draw".

No it's not! It's in the drawer!
Oh please, don't start this one again. 'Drawer' and 'draw' are pronounced in exactly the same way.

A 'drawer' is someone who draws.
Accent sometimes dictates how things sound.
Indeed.

I pronounce draw and drawer differently. It's my eloquent Scottish accent. smile

Oh and Islay is pronounced more like Eye-La. wink
