I do have a fondness for a romeo y julieta. Used to smoke the occasional classic/hamlet before going to Cuba a couple of years ago, now I won't touch them and stick to the good stuff.

As a relative newcomer to the joy of cigars, and generally buying what I consider 'decent' cigars, Montecristo, Romeo y Juliet I have not had many bad experiences, I did buy a box selection at Schipol recently and threw away most of the box as they just didn't taste good.

Anyway a new experience today, I have a box of 5 H.Upmann half coronas, I had smoked three and they were OK, but today I tried to light one and it was reluctant to light, then I just couldn't get a draw out of it, it just seemed too tight, eventually I gave up and threw it away.

Is this something I can expect to encounter frequently, it it an H.Upmann issue or is it just a freak occurance ?

do you use a humidor? Sounds like they're drying out.

No I haven't used a humidor, I bought two boxes (metal) of five around 10 days ago, the boxes have been kept closed so I hoped they would keep alright for a few weeks. The RyJ I have bought previously have been tubed, and the Montecristo just in a cardboard box and have had no problems with these.

It is slightly humid here right now anyway(Angola)though this is the dry season and it has been more humid earlier in the year and is about to get wet again, so maybe it is that. I have one more in this box and will try it after lunch to see how it goes.

Recommendations on inexpensive humidors that I can use for travel ?

Cheers

i think it's probably very variable to use anything but a humidor, esp over a period of weeks. It also needs to be something between 70-80% humidity i think... i am sure the beards will weigh in at this point. Most online cigar retailers sell them. You can get small (2 cigar) ones for £20-30. Clearly you can then spend up to about a million quid on them so let's say it depends on your needs/standards!

Right, just smoked the last of the box and while it was smokeable, that is not as difficult as the last one, it was not as easy a smoke as the first three, so I think I need a humidor, or posibly only buy tubed cigars in future as they seem to survive better.

Depends now many cigars and how long you want to keep them for are key to deciding on which humidor.

If you are travelling, then it's worth getting a small rigid pelicase and a humi-bag to out the cigars in. A cheap solution that will keep about 10 cigars at their best for about a fortnight...

CGars have a good selection to choose from...

I like both the original Phillies and the sweets. Swisher Sweets are supposed to be ok but they're slightly smaller than the blunts. If you want a hand rolled as opposed to a machine filled one you could try Heavenly cigars. They're nice flavoured cigars.

Have a try with King Edward Invicibles - made by Swisher as well. I love them ;-)

Around £12-£15 each would be reasonable.

The Alex Bradley - Black Market edition are nice. I've been buying a few at a time to store them but end up blazing through them.

R and J Short Churchills are my current cigar of choice. Introduced to them by Victor at Boisdale.

Anyone know if he has returned?
