The 5.56 we used on the range seemed really dirty and produced a lot of smoke, didn't effect accuracy much though. Not sure if we had the cheap graded stuff for recruit range work.
All depends on where it was manufactured. Most NATO based countries do a good job, but, and nothing against the Russians, some of the ammo that I have used from Russia has been the dirtiest I have ever seen. While it certainly won't impact an AK, a gas impingement AR can be jammed by dirty rounds if you fire enough of them.Pesty said:

AI AW is an awesome weapon. Because I can't justify that kind of cash for my meager shooting abilities, though, my dream bolt action right now is the new Remmy 700 AAC SD in an AICS chassis. I can probably get into that for about $1700US (not including some gunsmithing)
I'll probably just use my Leupold scope on it from the SPR because it has a 7.62 NATO mode as well as a 5.56 mode...

Looks like I'm going to be in Seattle early next mouth. So what do I need to take with me to have a go at shooting? and are there any other things I should look out for / guns to have a go with?
It would all depend on what they have. If you have a list from the range you are going to, i would be happy to provide some suggestions...The story behind the Porsche shoot...

Stupid question chaps - why was it that early machine guns needed to be watercooled, but later ones are aircooled? Ammunition? Metallurgy?
When interchangeable barrels arrived it was found to be more advantageous to use air-cooled versions of them rather than the heavy, cumberson and leak prone water jackets.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
