Receptionists and telephone voices
Discussion
Because it has a positive effect for the large part, and as the first point of contact it's beneficial to have someone cheerful and welcoming. Some probably take it too far or don't get the balance right, but there's people who can't use intonation properly in everyday speech, as well as the boring monotone users. I'd far rather have a happy sounding fluttery voice than a grey sounding man called nigel who speaks entirely in B Flat.
I notice that a lot of cold callers trying to sell me things (which I don't need, or want) all have the same voice. It's a young man's voice, absolutely dripping with insincerety, and pretty hard to place an accent on - very neutral. It gets even worse when they start criticizing your ability to run a business based on not being interested in paying them for something you don't need.
The worst ones are the ones who insist that they'll only take a minute of your time, but then won't finish reading their bloody script so you can tell them you're not interested without breaking your polite telephone facade. I'll never buy from a company which cold calls me - can't stand the practice.

The worst phone voice/manner I've heard is some estate agent calling me about the house I was in at the time. 'Alright maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate, just giving you a bell to see if it's cool for me to bring someone raaaaaaaand tonight'.
No....fk off
(I know not a receptionist, but this thread reminded me of that annoying tt)

God I hate it when people call me "mate" on the phone whether it be a customer or someone i'm ringing (unless it is one of my mates ).No....fk off

A receptionist in a local company that I use sounds like she is on acid when she answers the phone. I can't believe that someone can be that happy naturally first thing on a Monday morning. Having said that though, if she is on holiday and someone else answers, it's just not the same. I almost miss her ridiculous cheeriness.
I've been receiving a lot of cold calls recently, although as soon as I pick up, the line goes dead after a few seconds. I can't see the point of automatically calling a house and then cutting the call as soon as someone answers!?
Is it a way of verifying the number is in use and that someone will answer, therefore leading to further cold calls?
