Err point of order. Heat doesn't rise. Heat might cause a density change in the portion of the fluid that's been heated, gravity will then take care of the rest, essentially "pulling" the denser fluid to the bottom, and thus the less dense fluid is forced to the top.
As such dense matter always sinks. Thus he should go down to level 7.

Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process.
The less wordy version I use."Jokes are like kittens, once you dissect them they stop working".
I first saw yours on PH so I may well have you to thank for the numerous times I've used it (that also shows my jokes are crap )

Given that the temperature of hell is around the 444.6°C mark*As such dense matter always sinks. Thus he should go down to level 7.
I suspect any level of hell is pretty unpleasant temperature wise.

A lake of molten brimstone [sulfur] means that its temperature must be at or below the boiling point, which is 444.6°C. (Above that point, it would be a vapor, not a lake.)JustinF said:

Yes. But that wasn't the cartoon, and also it wouldn't enable the joke about the chap being dense and therefore going to the bottom, to work.

For some reason it really puts the joke teller off.
