Must admit, for me appearance is everything and were I to be interviewing I would expect any interviewee to arrive suited and booted. However, I have only ever worked in and applied for customer facing roles. Even so, if I had an interview for ANY job, be it dealing with the public or manual labour, I would at the very least wear a shirt, tie, trousers and polished shoes.

The only exception was where I was waiting for someone at a train station and I got chatting to the bloke in front of me in the queue for the pasty shop. Bloke was on his lunch break. Conversation drifted onto work, I was looking for a position at the time. Turns out he worked recruiting for a well-known home improvements company, and offered me an interview in a couple of hours, despite me being in ripped jeans and dirty Converse. Got on well with him and got the job, a sales role. As it turned out, I hated every minute of it and jacked it in after a couple of months, but I suppose it does show that above even appearance your personality is the deciding factor smile
