Just clinging on to the hope that they both mend well and soon.
Congratulations! They'll get there, you'll see. We've had friends in a similar position - more common than you'd think and they'll both be fine I'm sure. Hang in there...

Hello mate, firstly many congratulations!!!

Right, given how experienced I am in these matters, I may be able to put your mind at ease somewhat!!! Don't worry about the weight loss, they are expected to lose unto 10% in the first week, ours lost 6 and he doesn't stop eating. We noticed a pattern similar to yours in that he would go postal once he left the breast. Turns out he wasn't getting enough ( I can relate to that) so we topped him up with formula. He goes straight back to sleep then. We're going to get the pump thing going so we can measure. I understand it takes most women a few days/ a week to get the maximum flow going.

Bear with it mate. mrs C lost loads and had to have 2 transfusions, but she's on the mend now. Everyone will settle into a pattern soon enough, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya. Worry not, they're in the best place.

Cheers, and good luck.

Don't worry about the jaundice. It is very common. My little lad had it and spent a couple of days on the blue bed. He is over 9kg at 9 months, so it didn't affect his development in the slightest.

Thanks all, useful stuff, only just finding out a step at a time from my parents that I went through most of this as a newborn too!

Cheers; think this has really helped the Mrs get some perspective on how long it'll take to catch up, they've given her a breast pump to use (to be fair the level of NHS care we've had has been outstanding) and she's seeing a difference with that already.

I've had issues with my supply, 5 weeks in I'm still only expressing 20ml a session, at one point it got to 60 but I get a busy day with appointments and miss a few sessions expressing and supply drops off again, he is on combi feeding with happy mum and baby, 20ml is better than nothing.

She can be prescribed a drug called domperidone which is an anti sickness drug with excess milk supply as a side effect (in men and women!) takes a couple of weeks to kick in though, good one to take for baby too, it won't hurt them to be in mummy's milk

Never got little one on the breast, he will ask for it but just snuggles there, doesn't feed
I went to 'baby cafe' last week and they told me to get my supply up, not happening frown
They say breast is best but I know so many mums who only lasted a week, 2 weeks etc. no issues with health. I was Breast fed for a week before I started biting apparently, I never suffer with anything, I get a cold once every 2 years. I'm hoping this will give me some comfort when we decide my pathetic supply is not worth the cost of the machine hire

Good luck with it all, it's not easy frown hope little one gets better soon x

I second this. I had exactly the same issues - our little one lost a lot of weight and wasn't feeding properly as he kept falling asleep. I also wasn't producing enough milk. Domperidone is fantastic and didn't take long to work at all. I also took fenugreek supplements as this was also meant to help. I went from having to top up with quite a bit of formula to having a very small excess of milk. It's only now, at 7 1/2 months, that I'm starting to give him a little bit of formula again.

Fenugreek and oats help build up supply. Also expressing will be low, and slow - can take a minute or two to flow - I nearly gave up thinking is never have enough - now I'm whining about leaking everywhere......

Michael was jaundiced and also lost 10% - but as he was in SCBU they wouldn't let me take him home until he either put in or remained a stable weight in 24hrs - meant we had to stay an extra 4 days in hospital with him and the stress on me to get enough milk was horrible.

He's made up for it now - 20 weeks and 16lbs (he was 6 weeks early and 6lbs at birth).

Having said that, I fear he has just lost some weight by filling his nappy whilst sat on me as I write this.... Daddy's turn to change him? wink

Ella's been doing well but unfortunately I am writing this from A&E as Jo had a bad bleed in the night. They want to give her a scan and keep her in overnight. Fed up of this now, just want to get on with being a family. My paternity leave has just ended too so I am supposed to be working this afternoon and next week...

On the plus side there was a nice TVR in the hospital car park with a PH smiley on it...

James is back home.

I've encouraged the Mrs to question the midwife today on the suggestions for increasing her milk production, thanks all. Last night he was getting very frustrated with not getting enough of a feed, but I seem to have cleared out the local Boots of all their sterilising / formula / breast pumping related tat and after a formula feed he does settle. Feels like we're getting there slowly.

All the best to others negotiating their own tricky paths at the moment.

I met Charile today. He was lovely and looked very well considering what he has endured so far. He coped well with my active 9 month old.

Well done Matt and Di.

Plus he didn't go for my boobs when I cuddled him, which was a relief.

Day one of weaning - about a teaspoon of parsnip purée and so far it seems to have been liked and stayed down smile

Noah is 13 weeks today and taken to solids like a duck to water. We've had a respectable 1lb gain in 2 weeks and he's looking less bean pole like.

He's not overly keen on parsnip, but loves his banana porridge and also pumpkin and carrot puree

I'm not overly keen on the nappies though

I'll try parsnip again today, have some carrot to process and a sweet potato. Also bought some baby rice so hopefully we'll ensure he's not a fussy eater!

Mm once we're up to bigger portions I'm not looking forward to the nappy changes.... He's started going once a day again though rather than 3-4 days.
