I'll try parsnip again today, have some carrot to process and a sweet potato. Also bought some baby rice so hopefully we'll ensure he's not a fussy eater!

Mm once we're up to bigger portions I'm not looking forward to the nappy changes.... He's started going once a day again though rather than 3-4 days.
The only positive is nappies are more like plasticine and don't leak out of the nappies so much wink

I've discovered egg is not a good thing for me to feed. To be fair to SL Jr, it's the only thing he's refused so far however I insisted he took a couple of spoonfuls of scrambled egg this morning. Bad move frown He threw up in his sleep and woke himself up. I brought him downstairs but he wouldn't sleep and was really grouchy. I assumed the grouchiness was because he hadn't napped properly so I picked him up with the intention of rocking him to sleep. Instead, he proceeded to throw up all over me. Repeatedly. Ugh.

I feel really, really guilty as I had suspicions he might be allergic/intolerant because last time I gave him some boiled egg, he wasn't happy. I'm pretty certain he's had some products with egg in them so I don't know how intolerant he is, but from now onwards, no more egg in any shape or form.

Noah is 13 weeks today and taken to solids like a duck to water. We've had a respectable 1lb gain in 2 weeks and he's looking less bean pole like.

He's not overly keen on parsnip, but loves his banana porridge and also pumpkin and carrot puree

I'm not overly keen on the nappies though
Nooo, do I have to start charlie on solids at 13 weeks?? that's only 7 weeks away, that means my baby is growing up frown

General advice is to wean at around 6 months http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pa... . Obviously wildly depends on your inidividual child smile

Phew! he is tiny still whereas Noah is a nice big size from birth, I guess that's the difference and how you know when to do it

We've only recently started with Rose, and she's 6 months this week. She's also taking to it really well, but then she's a hungry little monkey. We're doing Annabel Karmel again as it worked well for Elsie and the book gives you plenty of variety for them.

Rose is really sticking the food away though. That and her thumb appear to be her two great loves in life!

According to the NCT class I went to, it's less to do with the size of the baby and more to do with how developed their insides are. A large baby doesn't necessarily mean that they will be ready for solids earlier than a smaller baby - you apparently need to look for signs such as they are sitting upright and can coordinate their hands to their mouths. SL Jr is a large baby (91% percentile) and I introduced him to solids bang on 6 months. If I'm *really* honest with myself, a week or two later probably would have been more ideal as his sitting up ability really improved.

One of the leaflets that the NCT weaning class i went to drew heavily on was the one from here: http://www.nhs.uk/start4life/Pages/babies-introduc...

It's so difficult though as everyone has different opinions. I think if I followed all the advice I've been given, I wouldn't be able to feed my little one any food whatsoever!

I went to a weaning session run by our health visitors last Thursday and was intending on starting weaning at 6 months (3 weeks away as up to 6 months its done by weeks 5 months = 20 weeks).

Since he shoves everything in his mouth, and has started waking at 5am for a feed, instead of going through to 7.30, I took it as a sign to start.

He was definitely up for more than a teaspoon tonight and had 2. I've made carrot purée tonight to try tomorrow. I've been given an Annabel Karmel recipe and weaning planner book and it does seem to be my kind of sensibility and I can't see any reason not to use it as a guideline.

I hadn't thought about the lack of runny nappies - that would be a bonus as they are spectacularly explosive and frequently leak.

I think we are having out first growth spurt. Ella is 2.5 weeks and is pretty much on the boob constantly. She can't be put down for more than a few minutes. Not good as I am back to work tomorrow and Jo doesn't fancy her chances of any sleep tonight...

Does Charlie have quite a 'soft' tongue? Young babies (all of them) have a tongue thrust which is where the tongue automatically pushes any solids back out of their mouth - this is a survival thing, very effective anti-choking mechanism. Starting to see the tongue thrust reduce/disappear is one of the aforementioned physical signs of readiness. I wouldn't go too much on holding head up well though, Charlie gets a bit of an exemption on that one (should he need it) as the literal brute strength to sustain it might take a few extra weeks to catch up with the general ability.

PS how is he? All recovered from his op now? How are you two, come to mention it? smile

We are good thanks Becca
Charlie is doing very well, he has another hearing test soon and a Downs clinic on Thursday where we see a Physio and a dietcian, he is doing well with his head control and doesn't mind being on his tummy for helping with his neck muscles, his feeding is great taking more than the NHS guidelines and if my scales are correct then he has put on approx 350gr this week which is more than the norm and much more than he was putting on before, so we are doing well
From meeting up with the other mums in NCT, he is no different to them, so fingers crossed he will do well smile

Fear not, we have been told by Noah's Meningitis Consultant to move him on to solids as he is very advanced for his age and ravenous all the time. He has exceptional head control, abiltity to sit up pretty much unaided and good hand eye co-ordination. If you gently support him he will stand himself up and walk.

He's been actively seeking our food and his tongue is constantly going when we are eating. As Di says, he's a big lad and having huge grwoth spurts where milk alone just isn't sustaining him anymore and was no longer gaining any weight.

Flo, the other night -

She keeps us up all night long at the moment! So I'm absolutely shattered. Isn't helping our current situation; whereby we need to move out in 5 weeks. I only have 4 weekends left and time is going by rapid! So far I have packed nothing away...

At last we have had a good weight gain, health visitor weighed him at 8lb15 a rise of 11oz in 10 days, he has previously been going up 15gr a day, he is still in newborn stuff at 6 weeks old though as his legs and arms are diddy despite him being on 91centile for height on the Downs growth charts

When my little one started weaning he showed signs of being allergic to milk or soya (instant itchy rash from a baby cereal).

He will finally get his skin prick test 5 months after the incident was reported to the doctor (test booked for next year). So if you have concerns with your own, be prepared to be patient.

woohoo This is excellent! Well done. I wonder if the slower gain was because he was still recovering from the surgery?

Not sure, only different thing we done was put him in a gro bag, where before, he was kicking the covers off, I'm wondering if keeping them warm enough does literally grow them

I swear it helps - also helps them sleep longer IMHO.

Michael would move out and upwards from the sheets and blankets, so that his feet would be where his head was. Sleeping bags are the way forward for us!

Charlie would do that too, at night we would put his feet to the base of the basket and by the net wake up he would be in the middle of the basket, now, he doesn't shift, he certainly goes back off to sleep faster after his night feeds
