What do you guys drink when you're out?
Alcohol free beer?
Orange and lemonade?
I wouldn't fancy drinking Coke all night so what are the tipples of choice?

Coffee, water, Coke Zero, alcohol free beer if they have something that isn't necks blue
Note: I usually just go out for meals so not 'out' in pubs for hours.
I've replaced sitting in pubs with other activities such as running and trips with the Family. Having a young family and a non-drinker Wife, I don't have much desire to go to pubs anyway.
In the early weeks, i think it's important to remove yourself from temptation. If you are constantly surrounded by people asking if you want a drink, it makes giving up more of a challenge IMO.

Replaced with running, cycling and tennis.
Not a massive pub goer here, oddly if I go out; either to the pub, a festival, concert or out for a meal, I don't actually drink that much, I'm more of an evening home drinker.
Went to the pub last night to see in the new year with friends and to have a last drink, 10 of us had at least 6 bottles of Prosseco, copious amounts of beer etc; I think I drunk the least as I only had 4 ciders, not because of gearing up for a dry Jan, just because I don't drink loads when out.
As for what do I have to replace alcohol; well when I did my dry Jan two years ago, mainly black coffee and water; fortunately I'm quite a fan of plain old water, I'm not into sweet juices, J2O's etc.

When I'm out I now stick to pints of soda water with plenty of fresh lemon and lime. Everything else - even lime (cordial) and soda is just too sweet.
Apologies for the Mail link but I thought that this was interesting particularly in light of the BMA 's revised alcohol guidance
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3336722/...
I do wonder if this would have affected my drinking if it had been widely publicised when I was a teenager...
If we accept that alcohol is harmful and addictive surely the only logical advice from the BMA should be - like smoking - not to drink. I may be mistaken but I'm sure I read an article by Frank Skinner making this exact point once.

Signing up for another year (currently at three and a half and rather enjoying being thin).
It's water or soda and a slice when out and about. I gave up sugar at the same time and the other 'soft' choices are so sweet they make my toes curl these days.
I'm more likely to be found running or cycling than propping up the bar anyway - pints of soda and drunk people both get a bit tiresome after two or three rounds.

As someone who does have quite a bit quite often I'm fairly keen to give it a go dry Jan or (excl holidays) just have a drink every other week to start with and progress for the long term.
Annoyingly I have a heap load of booze in the house/garage - so temptation is always there & no I don't fancy pouring it away. That said I don't generally drink week nights just Friday or Sat or both (generally at home don't go to the pub per say as young family).

I love the idea of a dry January, however baby steps for me- Am aiming to stay dry from now for a week. Working in a wine bar won't make it easier- that said, watching people fall apart as they booze has actually put me off a little. I have our Christmas party next Saturday, and I've never been too flash at such events without a few beers.
We shall see! Best of luck to all

I think this thread would be best kept for giving support to people giving up the booze and not having digs about inconsistent back stories or car ownership. Welsh beef you especially should not be throwing stones in that particular direction. There are plenty of other threads where that would be acceptable behaviour. Besides you have no idea what has happened in his life he/she may well have fallen on hard times.
Good luck mug81.
Apart from two small glasses of wine on New Year's Eve during a meal on a second date with an amazing woman. I'm still not drinking.
Good luck everyone giving it a go.
Has any one else signed up for the cancer research January dryathalon?

Not really. If you make the decision to stop it's pretty easy. Depends how you look at it. There's always an excuse for a drink, the trick is not looking at every social event as a a reason. Once you've changed your mindset the first time it becomes easier. You know what the biggest drive is for me to drink? To sleep.
I've never been a great sleeper and alcohol fixes that pronto. I have a busy personal and professional life and getting sleep is high on my priorities.
It's ironic because as most on this thread know a drunken rest is not rest at all.
I did sober October last year and hardly slept all through it, but my head was clear. That was the difference.
