Doing well here. No booze since NYE. Feel better and am sleeping MUCH better.

I've started back at the gym and hit new highs for bench and squat tonight. I am a bit spotty though; not sure whether this is a detox effect or related to sweating due to exercise.

Can't say I've missed a drink either. I did try some de alcholised wine from Tesco more out of curiousity than anything else. It wasn't that great, but made a change from soft drinks.

I'm still committing to being booze free until the little 'un is born (early May).

Superb. Trying to think of something witty to say about drinking and living with new born babies, but I'll let you experience that joy smile

Spots are as you say a mix of sweating it out and a detox. Well done mate, keep it going!

Trust me, the last thing you want to be doing once the little 'un is born is drinking. Getting up in the middle of the night is made 10 times worse even after a couple of pints, and being woken every Saturday and Sunday by about 7am isn't much fun either after a few the night before.

It's being a parent that made me try to knock it on the head. The fact I know I'm a much better Dad without a hangover (lets face it, who isn't?) was enough to really put it into perspective.

I've no plans to quit entirely, I love a good beer. What I have done is cut down drastically, from probably 20 pints a week to about 6. Monday to Thursday no beer, then a couple on Fri/Sat/Sun. I've never really enjoyed the feeling of being smashed, its the beer itself I enjoy, so this works for me.

I'm very tempted to join in on this. Current goal is 3 months without a drop of alcohol.
I managed 3 weeks since new years but it wasn't actually a new years resolution or anything like that, it just got in the way of my weight lifting so decided to do without.

Drank at the weekend and have since come down with a really bad cold/chest cough which is probably going to put me out of action on the weights until monday.. A week off lifting has really pissed me off as I was progressing well!

So yeah, I'm in for 3 months at least. If I can make it 3 months then I'll probably just quit all together.

one week down here!

I believe I'm what's called a 'functioning alcoholic'. Normally I drink every 2, 3 or 4 days. Eg say I get drunk monday, by wed (day 2) I feel like drinking again. By thurs (day 3) I will often cave in and get drunk again, and if not then by friday (day 4) I almost certainly would.

that's been my cycle for a number of years. 1 day on, 2 or 3 off. Which doesn't sound too bad except for my inability to go for one week without. Let alone a month or whatever. So so far last sunday was my last drink, and I'm feeling ok. Partly helped by having a really bad cough so since I'm feeling ill I'm not missing drinking. And on 7 day course of antibiotics starting today which is another helpful thing for me not to drink this week.

I've been wanting to take control for a long time, and worry about my liver. On average I would drink one bottle + maybe a couple of spirits on the night I drink. By not drinking every day you think to yourself its not too bad, but of course it is.

Anyway, lets see how it goes. Gave up smoking a couple years ago, so if I manage this I'll be mr healthysmile

Good luck buddy. I'm coming up for three months now. Still missing a drink on the weekend especially when the OH sits down with a glass of wine. I still feel sorry for myself lol. Keep up posted. It's not easy, but the benefits I'm feeling now are well worth the occasional feelings of 'loss' or going without.

I like feeling fresh every morning when I wake up, and not hung over. My dad went teetotal years ago, and I think like smoking you eventually stop thinking about it. Anyway 3 months is good - 8 days for me!

That's why I set myself the 365 days. I need to get that far away from it that I in effect don't care if I drink on the weekends or in the week or at weddings etc, you get the picture smile

I feel rather the opposite while I'm 'between drinks'. I've not had a drink this month so that's four weeks now; I just look at all the other people in the pub and think they're just throwing money away (as I do/did) in order to get a hangover, poor sleep and a general muzzy feeling for days afterwards. Pretty pleased with my choice. [/smug]

I am thinking about getting in on this. I drink too much and too regularly with a massive tendency to make a fool of myself when drunk. Will try 3 weeks first and if that lasts ok then I will hopefully go on to make the commitment to prove to myself I can last the year.

Have just been reading that drinking damages your brain cells. I am fast running out of those so need to do everything I can to keep the ones I have biggrin

5 weeks, only been drunk once. 2 weeks sober at the moment. Feel so much better generally.

Also my bank balance is great.

Nice one mate, well done.

I just don't seem to feel any better for it though. Maybe its because I haven't given up completely. I'm down to maybe 2-3 beers on a Friday and Saturday night, as opposed to that amount every night. Just don't feel any difference really?

Mind you, the same happened when I stopped smoking. Nearly 2 years ago to the day and I genuinely feel no better now at all, if anything I feel worse with all the colds I keep getting - I'm sure the smokes kept them at bay!

I'm working out as well though, so it could be to do with that. I just feel I have much more energy at the beginning of the week because I didn't destroy myself at the weekend.

I've just hit the three months mark yesterday. I can honestly say that I felt better initially (hang over free) then it took me weeks of continuing without before I really began to feel better. In the last couple of weeks I have been feeling (dare I say it) fantastic. I've been losing weight also which never fails to make me feel better.

I'm stating the obvious I know, but there are two sides that stand to benefit when you stop drinking...the outside like your looks and and the inside which IMO is far bigger benefit. Mentally, and how your organs must be feeling. After I first stopped my sleep was still quite poor. Bed too late and up earlyish for school run. I'm now getting to bed earlier and so my sleep is about right. I drink more water and eat pretty well too. Have a think about your diet and sleep and throw in light exercise and you have a great recipe.

Avoid fooling yourself into thinking that you're no better from having stopped heavy drinking. It just isn't the case.

Thanks,

Nick

I'm in, not for a year, but until June.

I've been drinking too much recently, it's been affecting my sleep/health and to a degree relationships with some people.

Why June? Holiday abroad then, so I'll be drinking then. I don't feel I'm addicted to it, it's just recently I've fallen into the habit of getting pissed to relieve stress.

Just over two weeks down! Still thinking about it every day....It feels like longer.

I've still been a bit ill - occasionally feeling nauseous but I don't know if it's coincidental or not. Still got this damn cough. So, I'm going to carry on, and see if I come out the other side wink

just stumbled upon this thread, i've been staying off the drink for the past few weeks (4th weekend this weekend without having a drink). i have to say it feels pretty good!!

what made me think i should cut back? 5 Christmas work do's, Christmas itself, new year and a weeks worth of celebrations for my 30th at the start of Jan! phew!

i have my brothers bday this weekend so i won't be completely off it, i'll not be having a skin full as usual though. hopefully.

I'm still going booze free. Starting to pick up a little bit, but I will have to find another way to unwind after work. I'm finding I'm logging in to finish things off before bedtime, which isn't really the best idea lol!

Not quite an entire year without, but I am cutting my alcohol consumption by a significant amount.

Being a student, it won't be easy but I am determined. Trying to not exceed 10 units on a Friday night and maybe a pint one day during the week. So far so good smile
