1.5 months in, not missing it. Was aiming for three months but can see it being much longer than that. Not finding nights out to be an issue, I'm not one to be quiet anyway so never feel left out of the group. I drive now on nights out and enjoy the freedom to leave when I want and get home safely/ quickly (also, with the TVR only having two seats I never become a free taxi for the masses).

Added bonuses? Well, aside from feeling and looking healthier I can take advantage of more opportunities. Evening calls inviting you to come over, go out etc from mates or the girlfriend are easily accepted as you can always drive...no more 'would love to but I've had a couple of glasses'

So far, so great smile

Can I ask as someone in a position who meets new people daily- are you finding it easier, or more difficult without booze? Honestly...

Not daily, but regularly enough... in some respects easier. It is much easier to meet people for the first time without a thick head.

Best of luck to you.

I am not an advocate of "drink is bad" and should be banned - but some people (myself included) seem unable to just have "one or two".

I was never a "big" drinker, but If i had a four pack in the fridge, on an evening when I had a drink, I coulnd't drink one or two of them... it was always the lot.

(I am nearly 18 months dry now.... and for me, it is actually become very easy. Don't miss alcohol at all now)

Just over 4 months for me now. Still feel tired a lot but I am up at 5:15 every day (except weekend), in the swimming pool or gym by 6, at my desk by 8:20 and home by 7, kids to bed, make tea, bit of telly/reading, bed, rinse and repeat.

No way on earth I could do all that when drinking.

Had a few days away at the in laws recently. Father in law is a monster drinker and usually our time together was spent trying to out drink each other. Once famous episode saw us go through 7 bottles of wine between us with some beer and spirits thrown in. Anyway had a few comments about it being odd, and he seemed in a grump because he couldn't get pissed with anyone. Got through it though.

I have a corporate dinner thing in a couple of weeks and seems that the industry I am in now (changed jobs recently) is full of boozers. I never felt the need to announce I don't drink anymore so that is going to be fun. Not worried that I will crack but just don't want a load of comments and stupid questions of people I am not allowed to tell to fk off.

I had an attempt at stopping drinking this time last year. I did well and managed a few months off the sauce, but come the summer, I slipped back into the habbit of having a beer after work.

Going to try again from today and try and go for the rest of my life without it. I don't think that I have any great problem with alcohol, but I know I am a better person when I exclude it from my life.

Oh of course hungover, social skills are zero. I mean meeting and making conversation without "social lubricant"

Ah. I see... apologies for my midunderstanding!

I was assuming business and work related meets.

When I do meet people for the first time in a social setting, the only thing thay adds difficulty now is the lack of choice in soft drinks (as a diabetic most soft drinks in pubs/bars are too high in sugar!)

I personally don't find any difference to meeting new people with alcohol or not.

Sometimes it can become a topic of conversation!

How's everyone getting on?

Four and a half months for me now, which beats my attempt last year. Have just turned 40, without the need or desire for a drink and completed my first triathlon last weekend. I feel so much better for not drinking, but I do still get the odd pang of desire - I'll be really pleased if I can make it to the end of the year.

Well done JQ. I'm more than 4 months in as well. I still miss it now and then, and definitely haven't managed any triathlons - that's excellent. I do have more time and energy though.

Going to start again today.

Same here, been four months now, 32 though.

Still get the odd pang, but loads more energy, exercise, specifically cycling ability has really increased.

Sleeping, digestion and energy levels are so much better

I stopped drinking July 2010 , moved to live here in the Philippines July 2012 and started again with ice cold SanMigs at 30pence a bottle (aprox 25 PHP ) There are some good inexpensive Spanish and Chilean wines available at £3 a bottle , Marlboro fags are dirt cheap so the temptation to light up and have a drink is ever present .
However , I've managed to keep to a strict regime of one glass of water for every bottle of beer or glass of wine , dehydration plays a big part in the tropics .

I'm now of the opinion it's time to stop again , I just feel so much better .I've also noted that my vision ( I had corrective laser treatment last year here in the Philippines ) also benefits without alcohol .

It's also a good test of willpower , so one last imbibe tonight and then I'm done .

Thursday and Friday were a fail as well.
I always seem to have a damned good excuse as to why today isn't a good day to stop. Lately it's been the weather.

sounds like me I failed repeatedly. But I have finally managed it- now been 5 months. So keep trying - you need to try and make it through one week (which is really hard) so make that your initial target.
