Having been back through 5 months of threads I can't see one on depression. What are people's personal experiences?

I have never been diagnosed or anything but some days I have what can only be described as a 'fog' in my head that makes me lethargic, disinterested, moody and incapable of decent interaction. No warning or pattern just happens. Can last a day or sometimes a week. If I am just left alone I come out of it fine but that's the problem it's impossible to be left with work/family commitments so my OH gets the brunt of it which is not fair. Leading to me denying its me and just ignoring her efforts to talk. Just wondered what other people's thoughts on the matter are or indeed on my personal experience?

Sounds like a good time to go see a doctor and nip it in the bud. If I could roll back time I'd have tried to sort things when I had the energy and it was just starting to manifest itself. If you try to ignore days like that they'll only become the norm and then things will start to get too much.

Yep, talk to a professional and try to stop it festering and getting worse, which is a mistake that many of us have made. Also speak to your OH about it; her willingness to talk about these things is a good sign that she will be willing to help you get through the bad times. Also, if you deteriorate the chances are you find yourself increasingly reliant upon her, so making an effort early can help smooth things should times become hard.

Plenty of threads on PH. Recent ones might be a little off-putting as one of our number had a difficult stay at a local facility and hasn't seen eye-to-eye with his local healthcare providers (whereas I have nothing but praise for South Somerset).

I don't have personal experience of this, but a friend lost his wife recently. He's taking pills and they've made a massive difference to his previous depression. He's delighted to have made the decision.

Talk to your GP and see what he/she recommends.

A friends sister hung herself over the weekend. She seemed to be doing well, had delivered Christmas presents over the last few days and was apparently looking forward to the new year. All seemed well.

Get help as soon as you can, talking to someone helps.

There are threads on it. The thing that stuck me the most was that it affects more PH'ers than I initially expected, I guess because it isn't something that is freely spoken about in the pub/work/polite company I tend to forget that it is something that a surprising amount of people have to deal with.

I'd be the world's biggest hypocrite if I told you to go to speak to someone as I'm not at quite at that point myself and have been avoiding getting help for far too long, but what I will say is keep an eye on it and don't let it develop.

First of all, talk to your other half about it.
It may also be useful to write down what had happened previously to you going into one of these episodes.
It may not seem like it but there may be some triggers that you are not openly aware of.
There are a couple of online tests that you can do. They are not the be all and end all of diagnosis but they may give you a clue.
Remember also that there are many conditions that come under the banner of mental health, not just depression. Go and see your doctor and see where that takes you. Good luck.

A subject close to my heart, my father had it and my brother suffers from it too, i believe the best 'home made' antidote is to ensure regular exercise preferably in the great outdoors, the natural endorphins should help you stabilise your moods and think more clearly as to the way forward

Couldn't agree more; the problem for me is getting up out of the chair in the first place & actually doing it!

Re the OP statement of not finding 'depression' items they are there - quite a few recently - as has been said but often under a different title.

Get some proper professional help & talk, talk, talk in between walking / cycling / running under that bright yellow thing in the sky, taking in everything around you.

I think the subject of the URL isn't great for sufferers but the content far outweighs the negative. Your comments on exercise are spot on. It didn't help me but i know plenty of people that is has helped manage their illness.

Depression is usually worse first thing in the morning, don't lie in bed wollowing in your own self pity, get up and do something, even if it's only having a cuppa and watching TV.

Try to avoid too much alcohol, a little is OK in moderation.

Try to get to the ROOT of the problem and deal with it if you can.

Excersise, go for a run round the block, swim, take it out on a punchbag....anything is good.

But most of all TALK about it to anyone that will listen, whatever you do don't bottle your feelings up, if it's really bad see your GP ASAP.

Good news.

You do come through it eventually.

I suffer from long-term depression, sometimes quite bad and has made a big impact on my life. It stems from a lot of problems.

I have tried pills, but to me I would rather cope with it naturally. Exercise and healthy eating does wonders.

I've deleted the link. The thread does have a lot of contributions from sufferers though.
