How are people burning 1000 cals in 45 mins>! I absolutely killed myself at spinning. 50 mins flat out, sweat pouring everywhere with my HR staying above 165bpm and i only did 600 cals?! I'm 6"2 and 88kgs aswell so should be more than that?
I only burn about 750 on a hard 10k run with my heart rate at 175bpm+ in 45 mins aswell!

Cals burned is not about performance particularly but about effort.Run your 10k uphill and take 2 mins longer and you'll burn more.I only burn about 750 on a hard 10k run with my heart rate at 175bpm+ in 45 mins aswell!
Spinning doesn't use enough large muscle groups.

Right i see. I'll give that a go then!!
I'm using a Garmin Forerunner 310xt with an HR monitor, so should be pretty accurate i guess? Better than the gym equipment? How would a treadmill know how much you've burned if it can't track your heart rate?
exactly. it doesn't know how efficient you are with your running style eitherI'm using a Garmin Forerunner 310xt with an HR monitor, so should be pretty accurate i guess? Better than the gym equipment? How would a treadmill know how much you've burned if it can't track your heart rate?

Interesting paper here looking at estimating energy expenditure from heart rate.
Will have to have a read, but my first thought it how it can be accurate. When I used to row for fun, I held a split for 5k of around 2:00, which equates to 200W, now I'm > 300W. I would estimate my body composition, resting heart rate etc haven't changed too much. otolith said:

Heartrate is controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, not withstanding the myogenic nature of the myocardia itself which has its own pacemaker, the SA node.
Heartrate, other than the SA node, has neural, intrinsic and hormonal influences which pass to either the VCC or CCC,which message the para/sympathetic nervous system
to decrease/increase heartrate in turn.
In short therefore, your heartrate is influenced by a great deal more than the muscular need for oxygen.
For instance before you even start exercise adrenalin is released which raises HR;a hot day? HR increases.
"The energy requirements of physical activity are calculated by measuring or estimating the oxygen requirements of the amount of exercise or activity being
performed, commonly called the oxygen consumption (VO2).Under steady-state conditions,VO2 provides a measure of the energy cost of exercise (kcal) and in
combination with VCO2 can provide information about the fuels for exercise."
ACSM (2006).Metabolic calculations:Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription.(7ed).(pp286-299).Philadelphia: Lippincott,Williams & Wilkins.
The actual measurement of VO2 typically is performed in exercise laboratories or clinical settings using a procedure called 'open circuit spirometry'.
Oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) are measured.Inter subject variability can have an SEE (standard error of estimate) as high as 7%.

I've heard the calls on the machines way over estimates the work done. Some geeky rowers calced calls for different paces on the erg. For me at sub 2 min pace I'd need to pull for an hour at least to burn 1k calls.
yeah completely agreed. there is no way on earth I am burning 100calories in 40 mins. Halving it would probably not even be close. But it does provide a comparison between machines and each visit

Nice thread bump. In the past when I have compared a polar HR monitor vs the machines at the gym I always get a much lower reading from the HR monitor - sometimes less than half. I think the machines overestimate or are just setup to make people feel good. It is very hard to burn 1000 calories, let alone in 1 hour... I'm amazed anyone can do an hour of pure cardio in the gym anyway, it is absolutely mind numbing.
IMO anyone looking to lose weight should be focusing on diet 90% of the time.

Cardio isn't always about just losing weight. I didn't say it was. But given the thread is talking about burning X calories I assumed most people were trying to burn fat, otherwise why they be so interested in the number of calories burned.... if you are just training for fitness or pleasure there are a lot better ways to measure performance than calories burned. Plus I would stand by my statement whether weight loss was the goal or not. I believe most of it comes down to diet.... eat junk and you will most likely feel and look crap.

I'd have thought that the people posting in this thread are already very fit, and so don't need to or want to lose weight. I totally agree that eating properly will help to lose weight and help with exercise, but cardiovascular exercises are often done to increase fitness. People trying lose weight would probably be aiming for 1000 cals in a week not in a session.Plus I would stand by my statement whether weight loss was the goal or not.
