www.patient.co.uk is your friend - look at the professional articles too. Very clear and accurate - including info on self help measures.

One word of caution - there is a growing acceptance that gout may be linked to other long term issues that may increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. If you have gout get it confirmed (typically a high urate on blood testing) and then check your BP, cholesterol levels and blood sugar.

Good luck.

As a sufferer, I can cofirm there is a lot of bks spoken about gout.Drinking lots of water reguarly is great,( after all it is efecctively a kidney problem)and avoiding foods high in purine. Shellfish can be particularly bad, but not seabass, cod etc generally. The obvious ones like red meat (pork is classified as such) and red wine(and other" dark drinks" like brandy port etc)all contribute to the problem. Too many mushrooms, kidney beans chickpeas etc, anything high in purines if over-done,might kick it off.The other stuff that can kick it off is an injury/trauma in that area, and general stress etc. When I was diagnosed in 2000, the doc wanted to put me on Allopurinol for life, (which I declined)and also gave me anti-flams that made the stomach bleed. I immediately cut out all of the above food/ drink and within a couple of years I was down to a couple of attacks a year. I've gradually over time introduced everything back into my diet in moderation and have been attack free for around 4/5 years.Every now and then I'll get a (very, very slight) twinge in my big toe to let me know I'm over doing it, but loads of water and a couple of Nurofen liquid capsules and it's gone.
I can't stress enough the value of drinking plenty of water through the day,and increasing the quantity when you have an attack .You all have my sympathy!!
Edit: To the poster that said he ws having a drink or so a night, with regards to gout, that really isn't ideal.

You cannot beat the voice of experience. Permanent lifestyle changes have obviously worked for sjc.

As he says a drink or so a night is not ideal.

I no longer drink more than maybe four glasses of wine a YEAR.

Abstinence pays dividends.

Up to the individual.

Gout is caused by high uric acid, a primary cause of which is fructose consumption. I'm on my bb so can't dig out any refs now but google may assist. If you've followed the usual advice and still have issues then please do consider cutting back on fruit juices, sweetened drinks, table sugar etc.

edited to add a few articles re fructose consumption and gout

Losarton seems to be the best way to keep uric acid down if you can't take febuxstat or allopurinol.

I was told I 'probably' had it when I was recovering from a broken knee.

It was much more painful than my knee ever was! Fortunately it only lasted a few days.

People reckon eating cherries helps, but who knows.

I was told dehydration was a big factor, or high blood pressure, but my BP was on the low side if anything.

So far (just two years though...), it's not come back and I'm not 100% convinced I didn't just aggravate the joint by walking 'funny' while I was on crutches.

I drink bottled water now, addicted to bubbles, but the small bottles and want to see a collection of empties at the end of the day to know I have drunk a bit and how much. Gave up booze. Stopped shell fish, stopped cooking with olive oil, stopped mushrooms, stopped spinach, well, high in purine foods. And offals are up there.

Look at that link BigAl put up in that link a few posts up. Well worth it.

Managed mine with diet so far. I have naproxin on standby but not needed it since the last attack a few years ago.

I dip into the forbidden zone but on occasion and watch what I have with it. But along the lines of a dash of worcesthire sauce with something etc, see how it goes.

You need to be careful drinking too much carbonated water, difficult as I'd automatically reach for it over still.

I had first attack of gout at 25 and have maybe one episode a year. I've actually got it right now which I assume is down the fact I have gastritis at the moment and it's been bad the last couple of days so I'm so dehydrated, take the Dirolyte etc and it's easing off but it does not make the toilet dash very easy :-(

Was actually just about to do a thread on gastritis when I saw this.

Holy thread resurrection etc. but I'm here posting in this thread at half 1 on a Saturday morning because my gout is keeping me wide awake, oh joy..

I was diagnosed a couple of weeks after my 15th birthday, at that time I was very active and eating very healthily, much more so than I am now. No-one was really able to get to the bottom of why I have gout, no abnormalities showed up and no-one we can think of in my family have ever suffered with it.

I rarely get episodes like this, probably once every 2-3 years or so. This particular episode has been most strange, it's been going on for nearly 3 weeks now and was all but cured 2 weeks ago.. Very frustrating.

While it's really quite painful, I am very lucky that it only seems to be restricted to my big toes, I think having it anywhere else would drive me to the edge of reason real quick.

apparently even though it might be and old wives tale, the best cure for gout is half a bottle of port and a wheel of cheese.
