I suffered a lot for a number of years to the point of having colchicine on repeat prescriptions.

I lost a little weight, cut down on fried food, red wine etc but the biggest difference was cutting out orange juice. Had a couple of glasses of it recently and flaired up again. Plus eggs seem to do it also.

Not really advice, just my personal opinion

apparently even though it might be and old wives tale, the best cure for gout is half a bottle of port and a wheel of cheese.
I'll report back later wink

I've had occurrences of it for the past few years. At one stage it was hell. Now it's mostly under control - I eat less red meat and ensure I drink loads of water.

Cherry extract capsules help too. The second I feel that something is coming on I start taking these and increase my water intake. Usually it goes then in a day or so.

I had bad attacks of gout but only occasionally in the old big toe, mainly, in my knees and ankles. After 10 years I went on allopurinol, now I am fine.
However interestingly the main cause of attacks were Peas!!!
Later learnt, bean sprouts were even worse.
With alcohol only certain types of red wine, but white wine Vodka and larger no problem.
Mark.

I've been on allopurinol for about 10 years now and have not had one attacks.

Gout is very personal - different trigger foods for different people.

I also take allopurinol and have been on it for several years. I was diagnosed by a pharmacist. I get the occasional attack but it lasts for less than 24 hours. Usually it's in my foot on one of the outer bones and I think I may have had it in my hands a few times. I don't know what triggers it.

Good resurrection here.

Well lets start this off by saying I am no way a picture of health. I am overweight. Up until September I drank FAR too much.
October I had an attack in both feet at once and I can confirm it was the worst pain I have ever had.

Roll on to now, I am on Alopurinol currently 200mg. I have taken Colchicine, Prednisolone and am still knocking back Tramadol to help with the pain. The pain is just there still...lingering. My latest blood test showed 480 Serum urate level. Which is high.
So I have given up alcohol for over 7 months ago, and I don't each much in the way of high purine foods. I am loosing weight.
If I have a fizzy drink its a diet Fanta. I drink Black Coffee during the day and water.

Am I missing something I can do as I'm still limping like I've been shot. Bizarrely the pain moves from one foot to the other randomly.

I started getting gout last year when I started playing cricket again. I’m 50 and drink too much premium lager. Magnesium tablets help a lot

I take (and went straight on to) 300mg and have done for fifteen years - if it still needs to bring it down I would ask for the higher dose

I’d agree, the doctor should suggest blood tests after roughly 6 weeks on the new dosage to see where your levels are.
You can’t guess sadly.

I had a strange one last week. Awoken with what appeared to be a Gout flare. I saw the Doctor, given 4 day course of Colchicine, off for blood test. Results back at 293.

I've been on 200mg allopurinol since last October. Given that and urate level, doctor stated it cannot be Gout, so I was sent to hospital for an xray for stress fracture/break which I cannot think will be a thing. Waiting on result.

Overall its definitely lingering, on day 9. It's very odd.

Google "pseudogout".

Pseudogout, also known as calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD), is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, painful swelling in one or more joints. The condition is caused by the buildup of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals in the joint fluid. These crystals can irritate the joint and cause inflammation.

Weird Woody that it is still persisting now, what 6 months later? I am on my worst ever attack (ended up in hospital as wrongly diagnosed by 4 health professionals as a toe infection until the 5th finally agreed with me that it was gout) and that was 5 weeks ago - gone down a lot and pain eased somewhat but still there - so much so that the alopurinol I have now been prescribed I cannot take as have to wait for it to completely clear before I start taking it.
For info my reading was 557 (9.9) and need to bring it down to 337 (6) I think ...

Could be, although it evidently goes for knees first. I'll follow up on X-ray from the other day and see if there's any sign of periarticular erosions

It's not uncommon to see normal uric acid levels during a flare up so it's not recommended to get blood tests until a few weeks after its eased.

I had it in my left large toe. Looked, felt and treated just like gout, but serum uric acid levels were normal. Had the first attack ~20 years ago. And if someone had said we can cut off your leg and it will stop hurting I would have asked where I signed. I've had a few minor recurrences since then, but nothing like as bad. I usually take 1 or 2 colchicine pills and it goes away.

How is your blood pressure? I suffered from gout on and off for 10yrs between ages 35-45. My diet was probably too high in purines and I drank a bit too much - over the recommended 20 units a week, but not to crazy excess. There's also a long history of arthritis in both sides of my family.

However in 2017 I had a heart attack requiring a stent and lifetime preventative medication. One tablet in the package of drugs I now have to take is Losartan, a blood pressure lowering drug.

https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/losartan/about-losart...

Unexpected side effect of Losartan: it reduces uric acid levels.

https://www.rxwiki.com/news-article/gout-risk-affe...

As a result I've never had gout since and don't have to take Allopurinol, which I had just been prescribed before my heart attack.

So, if you have hypertension, and your GP considers that you need to lower your BP, then chat to them about this as it may 'kill two birds with one stone'

Good luck, I could never forget the agonising pain of gout and would not wish it on anyone.

Dehydration and work stress used to get me several times a year.

Started drinking water and got made redundant 12 years ago.

Not had a single attack since.
