Glad you are feeling better, noticed the light-headedness myself but put it down to so much sitting around. Took the old dressing off yesterday and had a quick shower before replacing with new. Cleanliness definitely to the fore as an infection is bad news. MrsVS is a nurse so she is keeping me right on that. The shower was amazing as was a full roast dinner as a reward... Took a picture of the scar to compare over time. Still have a lot of bruising but the swelling is going down. Have learnt to take last painkillers at bedtime so I can sleep better.
Lots of watching TV and napping during the day along with walks in the garden and a longer walk this afternoon. Getting in and out of the car was better today so I might try a walk to the beach tomorrow as i can always get a taxi back if i am suffering. Also very happy so far but not yet paused the painkillers to see what the actual level is at now. Might give it a go tomorrow to see where I am at as I really prefer not to take them if I do not have to.
I haven’t got any dressings! Just the dissolving stitches and have been told not to shower for the first week.

I am worried about infection too but I’m guessing they wouldn’t have let me out without them if they were needed.
You were keyhole though iirc ...
Yep. And I’m an idiot too. hehe

Hello. I submitted a request to my healthcare provider to see a specialist regarding my suspected Inguinal Hernia.

On the form I stated I needed to see a "Gastroenterologist (?) General Surgeon (?)" but the healthcare company replied:

"Before we’re able to confirm cover for the treatment we need to know the exact type of specialist you need to see (e.g. an Orthopaedic or a Surgical Podiatrist)."

I would like to reply sarcastically and suggest that a Podiatrist would be fine but I shall resist.

Can someone please tell me the exact type of specialist I need to see for a hernia, please?

Thank you.

Hi Hereward,

That seems quite odd. I paid for myself, so just got a letter from my GP explaining what it appeared that I had and then was told to present that to which ever health care provider I wanted to go with. I went to two health care providers & with both of them I saw the surgeon who was eventually going to operate on me all being well. And that was basically it.

The title of the gentleman who eventually operated on me was Consultant General & Oesophago-Gastric Surgeon if that helps?

By the way, if you can shop around. Not necessarily for the price but for the 'atmosphere' and vibe you get from the surgeon. First one I went to, I wasn't at all happy with the organisation of the place and the surgeon seemed very patronising. The second hospital seemed much more friendly and the surgeon was really clear as to what was going to happen and generally just more amenable. Both abut the same price but the second one got my money and I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Brief update: Walking now almost completely back to normal, still the odd shot of pain but nothing serious. Have not taken my one daytime codeine today and to be honest haven't needed it but will still take the nighttime one for a couple more days. Still a little light headed but that seems to be getting better too. Will try getting in & out of the car tomorrow (MX-5. Might be tricky?) and then if thats ok will go for a drive on Friday before hopefully getting back to work on Saturday. Still taking it very easy but can't believe how quickly the pain is fading.

All good at the moment.

Thanks for that, much appreciated.

It is an odd reply, indeed. I suspect it's a Computer Says No response from someone lacking critical thinking abilities.

I see you are in Surrey too. Do you mind sharing the details of your surgeon and hospital, please?

Good to read you are recovering well. My Dad has lived with two hernias for 20 years but my one, which is just over a week old, feels like someone is simultaneously squeezing and burning my right testicle every time I do some activity.

Cheers.

You have mail. waveysmile

I had my two for a year and that was bad enough. Went from occasional stabbing pain and feeling like I had wet myself on a long walk, to down right agony in the last couple of months. Of course, you never knew what you were going to get from day to day which was helpful...

Looking forward to moving on from here & getting a bit more fitness back.

My consultant was a general surgeon but specialises in open hernia surgury. Good day today walked to the beach for coffee 3 miles in total. Took my painkillers ibrufen and paracetamol around 11 last night and slept until 9am. Another dose this morning but have not needed a lunchtime dose.
Can sit up and down without pain now and walking is pain free just a dull ache at times. Swelling is much reduced but the bruising still looks horrible. Now with the lack of pain my issue will be not doing too much especially lifting although I did get some washing done.
I had no real pain over the 4 years i had it but the lumps were a proper faff and the possibility of complications was ever present. I wish I had had it sooner now.

H-T: Thanks a lot for your email with the surgeon's details.

YellowTR: Happy to have your recommended surgeon's details too, please. PM me if you wish, thank you.

I told AXA to use the label "General Surgeon" since they were not able to think for themselves (I said it more politely than that). They have just replied saying they will cover a first consultation, diagnostics and a follow-up consultation but no mention of the actual surgery itself! So I have asked why they have left out the actual procedure itself. Hopefully just a clerical error. If not I will have to do it myself in the garage.

Back to work tomorrow. Can't believe how well this has gone but definitely no heavy weights for five weeks.

Ha, I just did a very light squats session. Less pain than walking or gardening.

I have also just ordered one of these dodgy-looking things from Amazon in the interests of science. Anyone tried one?! I will report back!

rofl

But as serious point to anyone who has just got a hernia, that type of actual underwear helped a lot & I mean a LOT! My specialist recommended them and it reduced the pain considerably.

As for the posing pouch? I await your results with interest. Maybe they will help you glide across the floor as the people stop and stare. hehe

Oh I wish I could back to work were it not for all the heavy lifting just not worth the risk of having to do this again..off the painkillers now and moving normally. Also surprised after seeing other accounts of long recovery times. Another week of leisure and then a week painting the lounge and back to light duties after that... well done on your recovery and thanks for the updates thumbup

Here you go:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Flexible-Adjustable-Remov...

Amazon delivered them this morning and I wore them all day.

Absolutely delighted with them - the discomfort when walking and gardening has all but vanished whereas before I would be in pain after 10 minutes.

Oops, spoke a little too soon. frown

Lasted until 16-00, then had to come home. Absolutely wiped out with a very slightly raised temperature, straight onto the sofa and back to sleep. No pain or feeling of anything going pop but see how I feel in the am.

Don’t worry, I have all the appropriate emergency numbers if it gets badly worse but I think it probably would have done by now.

I’m all good thanks. Made it through work today and am a bit bushed now but nothing else to report, no extra pain or twinges. . Another day on the sofa tomorrow, which should help again.

bks.

Seem to have developed a slight side effect. Can't sleep for longer than three hours and it takes an hour for me to get back to sleep. Also not sleeping deeply because of proper, full on nightmares.

Interestingly three hours is about the time I was out for, could be linked? Mind telling body to get up after what happened the last time I slept that long? scratchchin

Its knocking me for six at the moment so hopefully it will go away slowly. frown
