Today I was unanimously approved to adopt... not quite sure if I'm going to squeak under the line and be a parent in 2013 or not, though.
And, congratulations!blindswelledrat said:
BVD, are you married? Can you cope with a child?
Hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm pleasantly surprised at your news as I would have guessed it was impossible for you to adopt!
I don't mind, I am not, and I can. I will be making good use of the support I have, but do not anticipate needing any additional support at all (might juggle the rota a bit though to suit a tiddler's waking hours).Hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm pleasantly surprised at your news as I would have guessed it was impossible for you to adopt!
I haven't talked on here much about the voluntary care work I've done but for the past 18 months or so I've been helping look after 2 phenomenally complicated small children for anywhere up to 2 days a week. The older of the 2 is a former premmy baby who had a very serious brain injury as a result and has ended up with pretty much every single problem a brain-injured kid could possibly have - ends up in resus every couple of months, god-awful seizures, tube fed, can't see much etc etc - and her little brother has hit some sort of anti-jackpot of chronic medical problems. Their mum has the same condition as me - if she can single-parent those 2 plus a typical sibling with next to no care support then I reckon me, 1 tot whose needs have been carefully assessed to be within my capacity, and really good almost round-the-clock support, ought to work out pretty well. A panel of 12 including a consultant paediatrician thought so yesterday, anyway.
I'm almost certainly going to be adopting a baby girl, not quite a year old, with severe disabilities - I first started working with disabled kids when I - well - WAS a disabled kid, 16 years old, and apart from a couple of years out when things went really pearshaped about 6 years ago, I've done variations of same ever since. (Incidentally the cascade of really awful health problems I had in 2007/8 won't recur - I wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't absolutely sure of that.)
Awesome news B, I'm really happy for you
The OH is currently in hospital having broken waters about 10 hours ago and has been having regular contractions since. Strangely the hospital won't permit me to stay with her, I have to go home and can come back at 11am unless the situation changes.

Isaac was born on 19/11/13 and weighed 8.5lbs.
Just needs a PH sticker for his buggy!
Mummy and baby both very well.

We are 37 weeks currently. Getting a little cramped in there by all accounts.
It's a shame that they have sent the other gent home. Surely it's something you want to be able to go through together. I don't see why being there affects anyone or anything.
We may well be joining your club. Mrs Gumbo was due on the 18/01/14 but the waters broke last night and we are currently in hospital on the antibiotics and steroids route. Little Gumbo is in the 99th percentile for growth and was already causing issues however they wont admit they got the dates wrong!
No sign of entering labour at the moment but the consultant has said they wont let her go beyond 37 weeks (28/12/13) so looks like a Christmas baby or much sooner!
When he whines about have a Christmas birthday he will be informed it was his own bloody fault.
It is our first and I feel a little useless!

Well we came home on Wednesday; should have been Tuesday but we were prevented from leaving due to a paperwork error!
To be honest our whole experience wasn't great; my partner was questioned quite heavily whilst in labour regarding our previous births and death, why we were under a consultant and so on. She was holding our notes at the time, which even had a warning sticker on the front!
It is good to all be home though

Time is passing quickly now (for me anyway!) and it is becoming a reality. Just under 6 weeks until due date now, though we both just know it is going to end up a Christmas baby!
Well, I was wrong. Emily was born earlier today - her due date! 6lb 11ozThough not without complications. Very annoyed with the midwife at the surgery that my wife had been seeing, who was next to useless. For the last couple of months there has been a very large hard area at the top of the bump. We asked, are you sure it isn't the head? No no, she said, baby is head down, engaged etc. Wife started to go into labour Saturday, but wasn't getting very far so we went in to check all ok Sunday morning. Straight away they strongly suspected it was in breech position and sent for a scan. Yes it was. Wife kept in overnight to monitor if labour progressed, but it slowed right down. Couldn't move the baby so C-Section it was - Just a shame the issue couldn't have been dealt with weeks ago, ah well! We should have trusted our instincts and pushed the issue.
Everything fine otherwise though.
So another addition to the 2013 baby club, and glad it isn't too close to Christmas, for her mainly!
