Hi all.

Over the last 2-3 years I've gained 3 stone or so (I sit infront of a PC all day, and eat whatever I want) which I am looking to shift.
I've started going out on my MTB a lot more, and am trying to eat more healthily - and am noticing a little loss of weight, which is nice.

My main problem though, is I'm getting very hungry between meal times, and am at a loss for something to snack on? I'm not much good at knowing what is and isn't healthy for me, so have just been sticking to a piece of fruit between meals when necessary - but I'm getting a little bored of the same old thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for healthy/filling snacks which I could have between my meals?

Thanks

I have the same problem. I'm 18 stone 3 (now) lost nearly a stone. At that weight I still need a fair few calories but trying to find healthy ones is hard.

Fruit is good but not too much because of the sugar. Apples are good because of the low GI. I try for raw vegetables as snacks, carrot sticks and celery have good nutritional value had are harder for your body to digest so make feel full.

Nuts and seeds are good because they contain a lot of protein. They do contain a lot of fat as well though. It is "good fats" but if you are trying to loose weight don't have too many.

Cottage cheese and quark are both good as they are high in protein and virtually fat free. They both taste like st though. Yoghurt is ok, not fat free though as it contains lots of sugar.

Other than that try unsalted rice cakes, or oatcakes or unsalted/unsweetened popcorn. Very boring taste but low GI (so make you feel fuller longer)

Luke.

Ricecakes are very good for this.

I am trying to find a snack that fills me up that doesn't come from grain.

^ A 230kcal 'snack'? Are you mad?! The OP [appears to be] only partially active. He'll gestate a new house in no time if he snacked carbs like that several times a day!

There's only two realistic ways to snack without putting on weight. Either eat "high protein only foods" that makes you not want to snack, or eat "negative calorie foods". For more info, google the bits in speechmarks. Even these methods I would not recommend without being inclusive of 30 minutes of daily exercise.

Also try things like unsugared/lightly sugared green tea or black tea, the warmth and hydration factors make them feel filling. Ice cold water can also aid weightloss but is unlikely to make you feel full.

OP - What does your lunch consist of?

Instead of lunch at the usual time, how about a couple of Turkey (or appropriate chicken) salads? So, instead of eating whatever at 12 - 1 ish, how about suggested mid to late morning and another mid afternoon?
Depending on budget, aims etc, you could have a salad and 1-200g of appropriate bird twice a day & still more than likely eat less than you would with current meal. Plenty of protein & green, filling and without the potentially less good bits.

Ok I fell I qualify to answer this after just going through all this. Hit 40 this year and leading up to this over the last few years I put on several kilo's (6). So last year I start increasing my exercise even more (was already active), but to be honest not too much happened - lost a couple of kgs' but nothing big.

So I changed my diet. You need to cut out snacks full stop - except perhaps an apple each day. Drink LOTS or water - its fills you up and you won't feel like snacking half as much. If you feel like a snack - neck 1.5 litres of water.

And cut out all sweet things. Lots of protein and little carbs. What carbs you do eat make sure they are high fibre to absorb slowly. Don't skip breakfast.

I lots all my extra weight very quickly like this. I find also my stomach shrunk as well, so no only do I not feel the need to snack, when I eat I eat less.

Drinking 1.5 litres if water at a time is unlikely to 'shrink' most stomachs. That's a lot if volume for it to hold, even for a short while. Probably.

Hedgehog? Apparently our travelling friends love them and look how they fight.

A but like prickly pear I'd guess but can't honestly say I've ever eaten either...

Well yes - I do drink a lot. Most people will not need this volume

Stuff that helps me: beef jerky/biltong, protein shake with water or skimmed milk, tea (preferably green tea), coffee with cinnamon, chewing gum, smaller main meals to give you excess calories to consume at other times of the day, spoon of natural PB, cottage cheese with chive & onion, skipping breakfast, carrot sticks & low cal hummus, unsalted almonds, stuff that is low in cals and takes a while to prepare and eat (mango, papaya etc).

If snacks are your downfall maybe skip them altogether?
There's no way you're going to starve by going an hour or two extra between meals. You're probably not hungry, just bored anyway.
