I eat these

Yes I know they are not as good as fruit or some plain organic nuts but they are convienient to keep in my desk at work and in my golf bag.

A lot better than having a Mars Bar!

2nd June 2012? OP has had time to lose 9st!

The best way is to not snack at all. Wanting to snack suggesting he is/was eating too much crap (quick carbs).

If you're eating properly throughout the day you shouldn't really need to eat snacks. Even with a lot of exercise each day, you should be able to go 3 or 4 hours between meals without anything else to eat. Usually it's boredom or routine that leads to snacking IMHO.

I bet all the components are glued together with sugar...

Protein snacks are tough.
I've just bought some 100% natural Quest bars...I shall see how they go.

Getting used to feeling hungry, but not feeling low on energy is the hardest thing. The meals you eat have to keep the energy levels up in between. Plus water, lots of it (I'm on 4lt a day at the moment and find it really helps suppress appetite).

When I do feel the urge I have a sugar free chewing gum smile

Drinking is a good tactic to resist eating. The Leptin system just says that the Stomach is empty, but not of what - water or food. Conversely, a lot of the time you feel hungry is not actually for food but for water...

"The average American now consumes about 2,375 calories per day, about a third more than in the ’70s."

If it is to be taken literally, then I'm sure the 'average' American consumes more than that per day. I assume it means the 'mean average' though which gives a skewed picture as it no doubt takes into consideration children and the elderly.

If it is 2,375 calories for the average American person (when I think of an average yank, I think male, 5'10, about 13-14 stone) then that's roughly my calorie deficit target and it's bloody hard!

Currently sitting here, just had some beef jerky, with a cup of dahjeeling and my colleagues around me are eating cakes as it's someone's birthday.

If I lower my carbs by 2-3 days I really, really notice a difference in my middle. It just feels firmer. If I carb binge for a day, I notice it.

It's definitely all about mindsets and will power. I could quite easily go up there and load a plate up with some iced buns, cinnamon swirls and eclairs and literally smash them all in less than 2 minutes.

Inside me there is a 50 stone fat bd trying to get out. smile

If a birthday thing was rare, I'd do it, if they have them at the drop of a hat, I'd stay away. biggrin

Women and girls will rather lower that average though?

Regardless, there is simply no need for snacks. Snacking as it is currently 'enjoyed' is a product of clever marketing; no more, no less.

Yep and elderly and the kids… that’s what I mean… it’s a ‘mean average’. Most 30-something American men would be consuming more than 2,300 calories or so a day. I’d say it would be around the 3,000 mark. fk, you seen the size of their Dr. Pepper drums at the cinema? Or their cans of Monster ‘BFC’… I’ll let you guess what the BFC stands for, but it’s the size of a modest nuclear warhead.

God, I’m hungry and yearning for a can of Monster right now. smile

Birthdays quite often here, so always stuff on the side. When I was ‘bulking’ I would snack a lot on that st. Still, not a good idea even when bulking I would say as you’re not tracking your calories accurately and an excess of carbs isn’t ideal for anyone unless you’re running a marathon the next day.

I think snacking is good. I tend to not have breakfast these days, my lunch is relatively modest (I have a chicken breast, salad and some sprouted seeds today with hot sauce + kraft light salad dressing). Other than that I have some biltong, natural Greek yogurt, apple, kiwi and protein shake.

So yeah, snacking is good, if used right and not eating the wrong things. I prefer to have my food spread through the day.
