At uni, 95% of my mates are thin, I don't mean normal, I mean 6foot and 11 stone thin. Barely anyone in my year group is properly fat, I think they are all anorexic.
But the normal population seems to be getting obviously fatter, even over my lifetime, just 22 years.
It seems socially acceptable to be fat now for some reason, hopefully the norm will change...
But then it's free will (if it exists) if you want to be fat be fat, who is anyone to tell you otherwise, agency is a fundamental right.
Student dosser with inflated views of (his very limited knowledge of) the world. Some people are overweight through health problems (thyroid etc) or physical limitations (bad knees/hips/etc).But the normal population seems to be getting obviously fatter, even over my lifetime, just 22 years.

At 22 it's easy to be skinny, come back to this thread in 10 years. I should add I'm 6'4" 14 stone and make Brad Pitt jealous (2 from 3 anyway). I agree people are fatter as the years go on but its about what drives you, I want to and do climb mountains or go for 15-20 mile walks, plenty are happy pottering around retail parks.

The brain uses a lot of calories. I'd suggest people at University (assuming it's a proper one) use their brains more than average, and possibly have larger than average ones too. Ergo they will use more calories. Add that to the fact that they are more likely to walk places than most of us (even though they all have cars now, seemingly, Universities tend not to have car parks) and they can't afford food, and you get skinny people.
(37, 6ft, never been significantly over 12st, currently 11st 10, eat crap and have a mildly sedentary job, if that matters?)
The arrival of this topic is bizarre as it was exactly what I was thinking about this morning.
I was DJing in a club last night and inbetween doing a mix I was surveying the crowd and I realised at one point that about 40-50% of the girls were what I would call either fat or certainly on their way to being fairly tubby.
I was fairly shocked if I'm honest. We're talking girls aged about 18-30something here, not a load of old boilers.
But... despite this, there seems to be no shortage of skinny men in skinny jeans trying their luck with the 'larger lady'.
My girlfriend also commented the other week at how many 'cool looking skinny guys' she had seen walking down the street with a waddling and slightly porky girlfriend, who must have weighed at least 50% more than their chap.
It's a calorie laden epidemic I tell you!

Same here, Was 11.5 stone when I started in the office in November, now 13 (at 6'2")I'm waging a war against my own impending fatness. fking office jobs and lovely chocolate.
Most of our office is taking part in a weight loss competition, the only lass in the office is currently winning (nearly 2 stone!)

6' & 11 stone has to be anorexia central and a sign of a potential student life not lived, surely? I'm a touch taller and would look very ill at that weight. Very, very ill.But the normal population seems to be getting obviously fatter, even over my lifetime, just 22 years.

You might want to suggest to these people that they eat a curry or kebab or two and sink a few ales (Guinness by the sounds of things). I consider myself vaguely lucky to have walked out of Uni @ 15 1/2 stone - Didn't look good, but goes with the lifestyle (or did, by the sounds of it). Plenty of time to shift the after effects of a few years of fun.

I too have noticed this, and also, there are a HUGE amount of immigrants that are getting fat on our free, and great countrys cheap, plentiful food.
they dont have to eat either curry/turnips/borsht/potatos(potato, where potato, soldier took potatos, now hungrey)or other ethnic food that they didnt have enough of.
all the english(or english born) lass's that I know, are pretty tasty, not fat by any means but not uber skinny aka keira knightley. (apart from one)
Makes sense.they dont have to eat either curry/turnips/borsht/potatos(potato, where potato, soldier took potatos, now hungrey)or other ethnic food that they didnt have enough of.

Just don't understand the attraction to Keira Knightley at all.

Well, clearly a picture of your good self, with a tin of custard is required before the conversation goes forth...

I think you misunderstood my post as an attempt at being facetious, normal population being synonymous with normal distribution, no hidden agenda. At 22 it's easy to be skinny, come back to this thread in 10 years.
I was just trying to say that 'students don't appear to be fat on the face of it compared to the norm', this is because we are mostly skint and food is the first compromise.
At no point do I mention my own weight/height build, or refer to my apparently very limited knowledge of the world.
(I'm 100kg if your interested and far from thin.)
I know more than the average boo-boo about health issues that may cause weight gain, but that is not what this thread is discussing, it was talking about normal people.
And 'Student dosser'... grow up.
