Replacing Sugars with Healthy Fats is Key for Reversing Metabolic Syndrome
I believe there are two primary dietary recommendations that, if widely implemented, could help reverse our current disease trend in short order:
1. Severely restricting carbohydrates (sugars, fructose, and grains), and
2. Increasing healthy fat consumption
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I'm on a mission to make me 80Kg from 103 starting point, on 1st May. I'm 45 % there in 3.5 months.
When I get there (and THIS time I will get there) I will stay there.
Motivation is the key. My motivation has always been a problem. I like food. I'm Greedy. I'm lazy.
The way I'm trying to motivate myself is by having a realistic daily target reduction, and if I don't hit it to do more and eat less the next day. I'm averaging 0.13 Kgs a day, but have set my target at 0.1 kgs per day. (I revised it down from a stupidly optimistic 0.2 kgs a day. At this rate, it will be Christmas.
How to stay at the target once achieved? I've said it in my Thread, but I'm planning to use an Xbar R chart, the same as I would use in a factory to control a Key Feature on a Component. I'll set my control limits initially at 1kg either side of my target, and if I go outside the 2 lines I will take action. I don't want to drop much below 80Kgs as quite frankly I'm not interested in being anerexic, but I am going to be obsessed by staying between 2 lines.

I think you are setting yourself up for a fall there! Unless you are. Incredibly strict about meal times, time of last meal, amount of sleep, weighing yourself at the correct time of day (imo first thing in the morning post bowel & bladder evacuation) etc you will get frustrated when you quite possibly dont see a weight reduction!Personally I would initially go for a weekly target reduction.

What a reply...
So what you're saying is: eat more nuts, lift heavy weights and chill the f*ck out?
Does eating nuts really increase testosterone production then? So the head hunters were right after all and the money spent on Orchic tablets (don't ask) not a waste. What a reply...

Now, where do I find all my old enemies...
Personally, I've seen a benefit after introducing this kind if stuff, but could equally be down to lifting heavier and eating less white carbs, as someone above already posted.
So, possibly - but cant hurt to try! : )

Not easy when the whole western diet is wheat based.
... if you buy processed foods. It's becoming more 'en vogue' to prepare your own food rather than buy packets so it's becoming easier all the time. There's no need to be absolutely anal about it - pretty sure the odd slip will have no long term detrimental effect but there's no harm and plenty to gain by reducing many of these food 'products'. Probably.

I would respectfully disagree : )Not easy when the whole western diet is wheat based.
The hardest part is having to constantly explain to fat people why you're eating what you're eating, as they sneer at your 'weird' new diet.
Being called a weirdo for choosing to cycle to work.
Called a fanatic for running 5/6 miles here and there...
I'll stop before this becomes at rant Ha!

This^^^ I can't do it at the moment, but I typically eat 6 meals a day, so at my last work place I'd eat a small meal (Chicken/Veg/Rice) at 09:30, 12:30 and again at 15:30 and I used to get so tired of explaining EVERY day as to why I eat little and often. I don't question other people about their dietary choices so wish they'd bugger off and stop going on about mine!

The thing that concerns me is my fat on my hips area. The flab in that area is always cold, even when the rest of my body is warm - not sure if it's normal. I was always under the impression that body heat burns calories or fat (might be BS) so does that mean I am not burning any body fat in this region? Only really noticed it in the last couple of weeks if that makes a difference.
I don't know the answer to this but I'd have though core body temperature makes a difference to calorie burning rather than 'body heat'. I say this because some chemicals used to assist in fat burning can raise the core body temp slightly which assists in burning fat. This is all guess work, but the reason I'd say that the flab on your hips feels cold is because the heat from the vital organs that need to be kept warm doesn't make it through this extra layer of insulation and essentially keeps the heat in around this area. This is all guess work by the way!Autopilot said:

This exactly. I don't feel the need to comment on anyone else's lunch time habits, so why other feel they can comment on mine is beyond me!I can't do it at the moment, but I typically eat 6 meals a day, so at my last work place I'd eat a small meal (Chicken/Veg/Rice) at 09:30, 12:30 and again at 15:30 and I used to get so tired of explaining EVERY day as to why I eat little and often. The maddening thing is occasionally one of the fatties will suddenly think 'Christ, I'm fat!' and adopt a strict diet and exercise routine - usually broadcasting to all and sundry the ins and outs of their new found life style.
God, I am ranting now!
Sorry all ; )

Out of interest, what reasons do you have personally for eating 6 meals a day?I can't do it at the moment, but I typically eat 6 meals a day, so at my last work place I'd eat a small meal (Chicken/Veg/Rice) at 09:30, 12:30 and again at 15:30 and I used to get so tired of explaining EVERY day as to why I eat little and often. I've lost over 10kg in the last 4 months. I'm 5'11'' and now weigh 82 KG.
How?
Cut all white carbs from your diet - potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, etc. Plus no fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets - junk food. Once you get the routine going you won't miss them. Give it 3-4 weeks. Replace with brown rice or sweet potato once or twice a week.
Cook from scratch with fresh produce - Chicken breast/fish stirfrys, grilled fish/turkey/chicken and steamed veg/salads. Cut the white carbs and you will notice you don't feel tired after meals. Once a week treat yourself to your favourite comfort foods as a reward.
I took up a similar diet earlier on this year. Replaced white carbs with beans / lentils as they have less starch in (hence the colour not being white). Got down from 82kg to 75kg (I'm 5'9"). Gave it up out of boredom, and am now at 83kg, so need to get back on it again! How?

Get a good personal trainer and do circuit training 3X a week, one hour each session. This has made a huge difference for me. (Weights and Cardio!)
The above works.
Once you see the results, you will stay focused.
Good luck.
This is a replica of what I've done. Down 1 stone 10 lbs in 11 weeks. Had a break from exercising for six months and put on a lot of weight. I do 30 mins of HIIT three times a week plus some spinning classes. Today I ran 2.5 miles to a weighted workout and back, so had a massive workout and 5 mile run by7.15am. It gets addictive and the weight starts to melt off but you need a reason 'why' you're doing it. I've found a big one for me and it makes getting up at 5am to train easy but don't expect others to understand How?

Ha, this too. The old 'why are you on a diet? There's not a pickin on you!'Well, aye... That's because I eat right and exercise... Haway, it's not f*cking rocket science.

On several different threads. But no, seriously, I've read eating the hearts of your enemy really boosts growth hormone. Think it was an article on Yahoo! .co.uk or maybe the Daily Mail...
