I broke my nose when I was younger and it has pretty much controlled my life ever since. I have zero self-confidence and have not been in a relationship for over six years, TBH I rarely leave the house now.

Anyway, I've been researching rhinoplasty for the past two years and have finally plucked up the courage today to book consultations. I will be seeing two surgeons in August and September, with a view to having surgery three months later.

I know there will probably be a few people who will tell me to find inner peace, accept what I look like and get on with life, and I know that the Doctors say surgery isn't a psychological fix. For me though it is exactly that, and this is a chance I have to take in order to get my confidence back and seize my life back.

I'm not worried about the consultation, but I'm stting myself about going to London. I've lived out in the sticks all my life and have never really been to a big town before frown

So, has anyone else had cosmetic surgery?

I broke my nose twice in one day in 2 seperate places which resulted in having one nostril that worked and one that was non existent and always blocked. Other than a lump externally it wasn't a visible issue.

So no, not for cosmetic reasons , but yes, I had it rebroken, a bit taken out, straightened and generally sorted out. This was after several years of discomfort.

What exactly are you planning on having done? Mine was all done internally, nothing is visible now. The worst part was the temptation to pick the cut up there whilst healing, it itched like a bd!

I broke my nose on a Daewoo, of all things, riding home from work on my bicycle when I was 18 and this silly woman pulled across my path. Headbutted the car then rolled over it and did the same to the road. Radiologist said I had a particularly thick skull, not sure if compliment, but probably saved my life.

I couldn't breathe out of it for four years, got on the NHS waiting list when I was 20 for an op and had it fixed when I was 22. When I was about to go into theatre, the surgeon came to see me and asked what shape I wanted it to be! I said I thought I was just having it fixed so I could breathe through it again. She said the op was a standard Rhinoplasty one so I could have it changed anyhow I liked. I opted to just have it straightened and the bump taken off where it had broken. Woke up saying "What's wrong? Are you having trouble putting me under?" then realised I had a monster headache, nose cast and a tampon up each nostril!

Anyway...it was well worth it (the wait, the pain, the nerves etc.) as I could breathe again and looked a bit prettier to boot. Even though it wasn't for cosmetic reasons, it's still a cosmetic surgery operation.

Good luck chap, you should definitely have it done, what possible reason is there not to? You broke it, you're not being a narcissistic tart. And don't worry about London, just don't get on the tube at rush hour, that might scare you.

Thanks for the reply. I think there was some damage done to my nose as I only really breathe through one nostril, although it doesn't bother me, I guess the operation might have some functional purpose as well as cosmetic.

Not sure about what I want doing TBH, I've purposely kept myself in the dark about the things they can do because I understand the consultation is kind of like an interview, and they can refuse you if you have high or unrealistic expectations. From my research I know that I have a 'dorsal hump', and my nose looks too long for my face. Ideally I would want both things fixed, but I'd accept just having the hump removed. The price of this differs from around £7k to £10k depending on the surgeon I choose.

EDIT: Thanks MiseryStreak, you've made me feel a bit better about the whole thing. I'm travelling there alone and have kept it secret from my family, I just don't need the stress of people trying to change my mind. I feel like this will be something that will change my life for the better.

I really hope that the operation works for you and that you are happy with the results.

But, is it really that bad now or are you possibly using it as an excuse not to venture out?

Either way, I really hope that it works for you.

No, it is the real reason. I feel like I could never be self-confident or outgoing because it's always on my mind. I admit I'm a terribly introverted person, but the nose is the thing that caused it all, and it's also the thing that will end it all (providing they don't fk it up, which I'm aware is a serious possibility).

Thanks smile

There are very few people in this World who can honestly say they don't care about their looks.

Being worried about the consultation and the trip etc is normal.
Just see them as means to an end and get it done so you can move on with your life.

I know a guy who had his nose badly broken playing footy and it was a mess.
He had plastic surgery on it and it looked perfectly normal afterwards.

Good luck and just go for it.

Whilst they may treat the consultation as an 'interview' they will be keen for your business and also selling their expertise to you to some extent. I wouldn't be too daunted it's your money and your body. Hopefully they should just manage expectations and give you a realistic idea of end results.

Like the chap above mine was done on the NHS after a couple of year wait and they offered to reshape at the same time. Shame you're having to pay as, given the breathing issue, you could have had it done FOC.

In any case, as surgery goes it's not a bad one, and London isn't scary, you'll be ok thumbup

Don't let that concern you for a second, they really will not fk it up. Worst case scenario is it might not go to plan first time around and they will perform a second operation to put it right.

After it's over, you will curse yourself for not having it done years ago. This is my promise, get it done and start living your life.

Normally very anti cosmetic surgery.. but a colleague was in similar circumstances and had his nose realigned and he was much happier after it.

To the op, good luck. It sounds like you are doing this for the correct reasons for yourself, and nor peer pressure etc. 7-10k sounds a lot. Have you tried a local private hospital? (E.g. Nuffield, bupa). They will only use NHS consultants, and I bet it will be a lot cheaper. You may well be paying a premium for London hospitals.
Do not worry about the surgery, the bruising will fade and your confidence will climb.
If you are not happy with something, change it. I think the op should be congratulated for having the balls to do something about it. Best of look remember to do before/ after shots
