Im having the best year for a long time. However today has been the worst of the year for me. I can't understand it everyone seems to be saying this year is really bad but I've gone from normally being really bad to pretty much a few sneezes etc so far.

Maybe I'm growing out of it or something.
Same as me, used to get it so bad as a kid but as time has gone on it's now just a bit in June and with the weather this year only for a couple of days. If all the counter drugs don't work you can get some stronger ones from your GP on prescription, my mate did this and it sorted out his (ever worsening) symptoms.

My sympathy to those suffering thumbup

Have you tried Telfast?
Big +1 on the Telfast. This stuff is awesome. Only available on prescription. I'm on the maximum, 180mg dose.

Acupuncture is your cure, see a good Acupuncturist,in the meantime rub some Vaseline round the inside of your nostrils as a starter, which will adhere to the hairs up your nose and stop the pollen.

You need to speak to your GP and get a Kenalog injection, it worked for me. I have grown out of hayfever now but when it was bad back in the day I would get the injection in May and it would last the whole season without having to take any tablets etc. However it hard to get as there are dodgy side effect apparently.
I used to have these about twenty years ago and had much the same experience as you. It stopped the hayfever completely for the whole season. However, over the years GPs have become increasingly reluctant to prescribe it. I understand there can be side effects if it is used on a very regular basis. It's used for treating the symptoms of arthiritis, in which case it is given on a weekly basis. I am not sure there are any issues if used once a year. Perhaps, some qualified people on here can comment.

I appear to have grown out of it, but on a bad day I will use a squirt of beconase and some eye drops.

This post has really fked me off.

I went to the doctors as I do year on year and every year my GP tells me there is nothing stronger than cetirizine 10 mg (or however you spell it ) which is 1 a day.

I normally take 1 every 4 hours and it sometimes eases my suffering but this year it has done nothing. I went back and was told 'Some people should just stay indoors during the summer'

He has given me different tablets over the years and nothing has ever worked - last year when I got the cetirizine it helped a little but it’s still rubbish.

My symptoms:
Waking in the night fighting for breath - I have a blue inhaler I got 2 years ago for this.
Constant blocked runny nose, I can’t blow/sniff but my nose runs like a tap and dribbles down my face - may sound funny but is fking annoying
Pink eye - my eyes are unbelievable itchy all of the time and very gunky
I have tried various eye drops which all just irritate my eyes

I have tried various nasal sprays which I worked out I can only use in an air conditioned rooms where I can breathe, but these make me sneeze uncontrollably for about 5 mins then it blocks again. If I’m not in an air-conditioned room the spray goes up and runs back down as I can't breathe through my nose.

This plagues my life and to be told 'Some people should just stay indoors during the summer'
and then reading posts as above saying there are other things you can try as really pissed me off.

Might be looking to change GP's now.

Bloody hell Dave, that sounds hellish! Never again will I complain about an occasional runny nose or itchy eye when I know other people have it far worse.

Have you tried the Vaseline up the nose? Doesn't sound nice, but works for me and my Dad does it too.

I have yes - it helps a little bit but my nose still runs and when I wipe it away it takes the vaseline with it.

The weird thing is though other then using the nasal sprays I very rarely sneeze.

Sorry to hear that your Hay Fever is so bad. Sounds like mine when I was a teenager. Im 40 now and its not too bad, I control mine with Zirtek (Cetrizine) and Beconase Nasal spray.

When I moved up North mine got worse due living nearer the countryside and because of the farming. I asked my Drs about desensitisation injections but they knew nothing about them. I had to do my own research and luckily enough I found a clinic at a local hospital that did them.

I basically told my Dr that I wanted reffering there, didnt give them a choice. If you want me to go in to more detail as to whats involved I will.

I still get symptons now but the the poor weather combined with my meds keeps it at a reasonable level. The one thing im yet to manage properly are my itchy eyes!

I think you're right though, time to change your Dr.

Sorry getmecoat

Seriously though, it was not a quick path to getting to this drug, and even then I started on 60mg, then 120mg for a long time before my doctor gave me the 180mg dose.

I spent the majority of my childhood bouncing around different drugs, until Telfast was suggested in my teens. I spent a few years on the 60mg, which was adequate most years, but needed supplementing with eye drops and nasal sprays others.

The 120mg is supposed to be the maximum dose that can be taken for hayfever, and I spent a god few years on this, and TBH most seasons it would probably just about be sufficient for me.

One year I got it very bad and I went to the docs (I've been with the same surgury for a long time, so they appreciate the hassle I've gone though) and I said:

"The Telfast is great, but it's not quite up to it this year". Doc started talking about other drugs and I just asked if there was a stronger dose, because I just wanted more of the same affect. He said 180mg isn't normaly covered by hayfever, but since we know it works, you can have it.

I had done a bit of research before hand, by the way, so I knew there was a stronger dose available! Ever since, I've been on 180mg.

Anyway, if you want to try Telfast, you might need to push for it. It's expensive for the NHS compared to feeding you the usual stuff, so there's a reluctance by GPs to put people on it. I use just my 180mg tablets and keep the over the counter eye drops on me, just in case my eyes flare up, which they can do occasionally.

Good luck with it smile

Have you tried the over the counter eye drops? After about 5 secnods of stinging, they seem to kinda numb your eyes and it gives your eyes time to un-swell and flush out whatever's bothering them.

Yes I have but they seem to be a bit hit and miss. Would be good if I could find something to take that stopped them itching in the first place.

Same here, sufferd all my life with hay fever, bought a z4 in 2010 and since then I haven't had a single sneeze or runny eyes, I don't know if driving with the roof down all spring/summer has given me a massive intake of pollen and my body has adjusted but it's so good, I don't even think about hay fever anymore....
