I can support this with a medical anecdote (statistical sample of one, ie me). I have a long history of digestive issues (IBS, cramps, diverticular disease, etc) going back 8-10 years. Have been on 3 types of regular meds, and 2 on-demand meds, seen a variety of consultants over the years. Despite the medication i still had symptoms.

I started intermittent fasting (16/8 daily) in August 2012. By the middle of September i had thrown all of my medicine in the bin, and have been completely symptom-free ever since.
How are your bowel movements? Regular?

I am completely cured, yes. The only time things go a bit iffy is when i binge on refined carbs - eg if i get drunk and down a whole 200g bag of chilli flavour doritos all by myself, but i suspect that's "normal" laugh

I started this myself a few weeks ago, just finished my 3rd week, and I'm a convert to this lifestyle!

Although I will not be weighing myself for a few weeks yet, It is quite noticeable that I've lost some weight already.

For those considering starting, or those that have started and are struggling, it DOES get easier.

I started because I need to lose a few kgs, plus I noticed how greedy I'd become with food. For the first week I struggled beyond belief, but just a few weeks later and the self control I'm able to exert when it comes to food has increased already. On fast days I skip breakfast, something I've never done, and have soup for lunch and either stir fry or turkey steak and some steamed veg for dinner, whilst drinking plenty through out the day.

I'll ensure I make an occasional contribution this thread to detail my progress.

Best of look to all those considering starting this.

I also started recently (26th of Mar).

So far, it's not proven too difficult. I had headaches in the first week. But this might be partly due to going cold turkey on sugar in drinks.

My goal is to reduce visceral fat - i.e. look less pregnant, and reduce my overall body fat %. Not too bothered about my overall weight.

Weighed in today, 2.5kg down, body fat down 1%, waist down an inch. BMI for what it's worth down from "Overweight" to "Health Weight".

The one down-side is I'm drinking a lot more water than usual - so I'm having to make frequent trips to the toilet.

I don't feel any worse off at gym either.

I'm certainly going to keep it up a few more weeks.

My wife started this regime about 7 weeks ago and has had some success. I found it annoying to come home on her fast days to no dinner so decided if you can't beat them then join them.

I started on 25th March. I've had absolutely no problem with the fasting except for possibly slightly disturbed sleep - waking up at 4am because I'm really feeling hungry.

That said I've trimmed off 4kgs without really noticing. The real upside I've noticed is that on the non-fast days I just don't eat so much - I feel sated after a much smaller amount of food.

Last time I went on a diet (low carb 7 days a week) I lost a considerable amount of weight (10kgs)but could only sustain that regime for about 2-3 months. I really think I can keep this one going permanently although at some point I might just switch to one day per week to maintain weight.

I'm sorely tempted to get my weight down to a level it's not been for 40 years - sub 14st! Just got 4kgs to go!

Surely of you add 7 x (Your daily allowance of calories) = Total calories for the week. Lets say for this 2000 a day. Then stick to a diet of 1500 calories per day. That creates a negative of 3500 a week.

Is that not better than starving for two days!

Just starting my 4th week and a little dissapointed with the results so far.

However i'm probabaly to blame for this as my weekends for the last few weeks have been pretty excessive so I guess it all balances out.

Don't find the fast days too difficult really, usually have a soup for lunch and fish of some sort in the evening - grilled cod in a tomato sauce or a light creme fraiche based sauce come in easily under my 600 calories even with a couple of boiled new potatoes alongside.

Haven't done a great deal of excercise recently either, but now the weather is nicer the bike has come back out to play and i've also got hold of a copy of the insanity work out.

Still the one thing I miss is my coffee - struggling to drink it black and sugarless frown

Seems a bit silly to say you're disappointed with the results. wink What you've said is, "I tried a diet but didn't stick to any of the rules and am disappointed with the diet."

As for the coffee, you can have it full fat - it's about 50-70 calories depending on how much extra you put in it.

Dissapointed might be the wrong word I guess - I should be impressed actually with looking at what i've eaten and drank over the last few weekends.

How calorific are sweetners?

I can take the coffee black but do like a bit of sweetness in it.

Speaking about sugar - I had a tin of Gingerbeer today - 43% of sugar RDA in a 330ml tin !

When I took the pledge ginger beer was my first choice but it's packed with empty calories. Not seen a low/zero cal version either. frown

FWIW in my book that's more than 100% of the sugar I'm happy to consume. I try to keep it to zero, but sometimes it's pretty much unavoidable and still be sociable. Sugar like any starchy carb I try to avoid.
