So it's happening more frequently now... I'm standing up, stretching, then feeling like Ewan McGregor looks after shooting up in Trainspotting.

I know this is common to everyone, but what exactly causes it to become so extreme? I'm 29, healthy and a non-smoker.

Or am I just being a bit of a puff about it?

Postural hypotension is, I think, the generic medical term for when that happens. Low blood pressure. Which generally is a good thing but can get a bit overcooked, especially in tall people who stand up quickly, basically your system takes a couple of seconds to adjust to different parameters (there must be a better word but I dunno what it is) needed to keep your blood circulating at roughly the same pressure/speed.

Have you lost weight or otherwise got fitter recently (and so lowered your blood pressure)?

If it's really bothering you, especially if it's ever actually made you fall over, you could ask your GP although I've absolutely no idea what, if anything, they could do about it - measure your BP and marvel at its lowness probably. hehe

I have lost weight and got a lot fitter lately and am also experiencing massive headrushes when i stand! What would the weight loss etc have to do with it? It's beginning to worry me!

Stand up slower then.smile

Seriously though make sure you've eaten enough and your blood sugar levels are ok.Check your heart rate as well..anywhere between 45-80 is ok.If your HR is in the low 40's have your BP taken..your diastole, the lower figure, should not be much under 55 ish.

Cheers for the replies : )

I stopped drinking recently, I've dropped a little weight, and I'm training much harder now - without sounding like a cock, I'm reasonably fit.

I suspected low blood pressure, but possibly also a large calorie deficit also... I'd read that can cause these things.

Also, I only do smack after dark.

Interesting. For years I've had a similar experience. The standing up head rush is one thing but I also get 'migraine pain' when I dip my head down below shoulder height. I'm 6'4", fairly lean, low blood pressure and low heart rate (~50bpm). GPs have always shrugged it off as "normal - everybody gets that" but I'm certain it isn't normal to the degree I experience it. But this would explain it.

Quite common. Stand up slowly or sit with head between legs and rise slowly. As before it's postural hypotension. Your heart doesn't pump quick enough fir change of pressure quick enough.

Check your hydration levels. Is your p!ss generally clear, yellow or brown?

Dehydration means your cells have taken water from your blood plasma, lowering your overall blood pressure, giving you problems (yes, problems) like you have. Standing up and nearly passing out, is not an evolutionarily advantageous. If you're fitter, you likely need more water to backup your sarcoplasmic reticulum and general water retention, also you might be sweating more water than you're used due to your workouts than in the past...

I have been slightly dehydrated, but not much. After years of running I am reasonably well tuned to how hydrated I am - piss has been fine recently.

It's only cool if you are VERY fit, otherwise you have Absolute Bradycaria: a medical condition which needs investigating.

The fact your are suffering from Vasovagal and Bradycardia means (to me) that something is wrong somewhere and you should get it checked out.
