I have downloaded that app. Surprised at the amount of calories in stuff.

The first thing that you need to change is your attitude towards losing the weight and starting to exercise. If you go at it half-hearted you won't stick to it. Set yourself some achievable goals and have a plan. Otherwise you'll just forget about it in a week and you'll be back on the Burger Kings and the driving to the shops!

I'm going to do start off by cutting my calorie intake a bit, and then when I go back to college on 5th september start using the college gym.

I'm in a similar position to you op. except I'm the wrong side of 40 so shifting the lard is harder. I started off at 22 stone, currently at 19st 11lbs. I detest the gym but I'm forcing myself to go. So far I'm "achieving" an hour on the treadmill (2° slope, 6.2km/h) with a minute of running every five minutes actually I walk 4 minutes, run a minute, IYSWIM). Mrs Dibble is doing the "Couch to 5k" app and is really doing well at it.

The biggest win for me so far has been to cut right back on the booze. My job is very sedentary and there's always the temptation to eat crap, especially when stuck working extended shifts. I also have a 13 year old retriever who can't walk very far any more, so even that exercise doesn't happen now for me.

But why wait until you're back at college? That's 2 weeks where you could get started, even if it's "only" a walk or a bike ride.

Get up and get moving, fatty...

wink

That was the big wake up call for me too. Now I know I can have a curry, or a slice of pizza or cheese on toast but I'm not kidding myself about the calorie (and fat) content and having dropped some weight quite quickly I tend to find I'm no longer as interested in eating those foods and missing my calorie target for the day / week. I also treat it like a bit of a game. So, without starving myself or being stupid, I look for ways to shave a few calories off my breakfast, or lunch or whatever - different fruits, cereals, porridge, etc.

I am in a similar position (trying to loose weight) and the biggest issue for me is having the patience when you look at yourself with 2 months in. It is motivating to feel better and to see the belt going in another slot but the fact that it takes time is frustrating for me. If I could bring myself not to have a couple of pints on a Friday or 4/5 and not have any on Saturday I would of made much more progress. Currently 1.5stone lost.

Thankfully you have age on your side so losing weight shouldn't be too much of an issue, Luke. smile

Any friends play football? I know you don't like the sport (neither do I as it happens) but it's a good way of doing exercise without getting bored so long as you commit yourself and push yourself to run hard.

Recently I've started running 5ks with the good lady which is pretty relaxing so long as you have somewhere nice to run. Living close to a couple of nice parks really does have it's advantages sometimes!

Oh and get off Forza! biglaugh

Too many biccies on all those tea breaks, rozzer! wink
Well done on the loss so far, though. thumbup

I started a diet and exercise regime last weekend.
I'm limited to 1800 cals/day, but, considering I'd usually have 4 large cans of Stella every night, I'm finding it fairly easy to limit my intakes! Gin & slimline tonic is very low cal and lacks carbs! smile

I've signed up on weightlossresources.co.uk and keep an accurate diary of my food intake and my exercise.
I'm 42, weighed in at 113kg (17st 11) last weekend, and have a target weightloss of 1kg/week until mid December, when, hopefully, I'll be <95kg, essentially within the 14 stone bracket.
I'll lose more if I can.

Sunday & Tuesday I swam 1,200 metres.
I'm off to the pool when I finish work tonight and my target's 1,500m in 55 minutes.

My motivations: I have a load of nice clothes in my wardrobe that don't fit, I don't sleep very well (lack of exercise!), I've 2 active daughters I want to keep up with and I want to be fitter for 2 weeks skiing in Whistler over Christmas & New Year. smile

Another hour on the treadmill tonight.

2 deg slop, walk at 6.2 to 6.4 km/h for five minutes, "run" at 9 km/h for 1 min 5 secs, then walk at 6.2 km/h until the next "run". I run at the 5, 10, 15, 20 minute etc etc point. Managed that tonight up to 50 minutes when I could only run for about 30 secs.

The result? The leakiest man in NATO:

I managed to go from 19st to 14 1/2st in 6 months when I was 20. I simply ate this for 6 months:

Breakfast: 3 weetabix
Lunch: 1 sandwich (usually ham)
Dinner: Tuna/Ham with jacket potato and 1 tin of baked beans
Drinks: Squash/Coffee

Gym 4 times a week, mainly focusing on the rower.

Not sure I could be so extreme again, the one thing I will say is it's a lot easier to do when you're single and 20!

Good luck

Ps. Watch rocky replays on itv4 for inspiration

Err, no, but yes, but.

Age is not irrelevant but at the same time it is.

OP & Dibble are both as both lardy & generally about the size I was. One is closer to my age and one isn't.

However, unless you're desperate to shed in a hurry, diet (in a lifestyle sense rather than a few weeks of pain) is the key.
Age wise & love for diirty I'm closer up the old bloke, weight wise (but still.want to take that bargain/family bucket challenge smile ).
I'm the equal of either, yet I've never seen the inside of a gym for 20 years (and still sup way too much). I do a bit at home, but not enough to excite even the vaguely committed protagonists.
However, 90%+ commitment to diet and some degree of appropriate exercise has resulted in Sushi levels of weight loss, albeit over a slightly stretched timescales - clap to that man! Given my lack of commitment, that's ok.

S'pose what I'm trying to get at is that diet is vital and often plays a poor second to hitting the gym in these parts. However, as a mostly converted fatty, working out what's wrong with the diet really is very, very vital - held me back for far too long!

I understand that the reason we find it harder to keep off the fat as we age is not "because we get old" but because we move less as we get old. This also means our muscles shrink so our bodies require less calories to sustain ourselves.

I've kept well within my 1,800 cal/day limit set on weightlossresources.co.uk , have found meals that are fairly low on calories and fat that are very filling smile but I've not had a 500ml 5.2% Stella since last Sat. frown I looooooove my Stella Artois, but, too many carbs!

I went swimming last Sun, Tue, Thu and Sat., totalling 4.5km (min. 1km each visit), and did my first weigh-in yesterday morning before I went swimming again.
I'm 1 week in and I've shifted 2.5kg. woohoo

I treated myself to a Gin & slimline tonic last night. hehe

I'm also finding I'm sleeping much better. :thumbup.
Heck, if the Hairy Bikers can do it, then I bloody well can too!
