I've had bad toothache for over a week now.

I'm terrified of the dentist, probably something that stems from my childhood - I have some bad memories.

I haven't been to a dentist in nearly 5 years now, and prior to that sporadically over a period of 10 years or so.

I feel completely truamatised when I have any dental work done - even small fillings.

It would appear that dentists will no longer administer anesthetic and put one to 'sleep'.

Am I alone fearing the dentist like this? Anybody have any suggestions?

I was in pretty much the same state as you 18 months ago, speak to your doctor, they will give you something to calm you down... modern anesthetics are so good you wont feel anything.

Since then I've found an excellent dentist but due to not having been for 10 years I ended up needing two root canals, 1 crown, 5 white fillings (replacing manky old amalgam ones) and several meetings with the hygienist.

Safe to say I'm now no longer scared of the dentist biggrin

The OH was/is like you.

Do a search on the web for local practices that specialise in nervous patients. Usually you'll pay for the privilege. But they are expecting you to act up/take a long time/cry etc.

But there is no getting around it. Someone is going to have to get in there and deal with it. Could just be an x-ray and some antibiotics if you go nice and early and don't let it fester.

You (Cupramax) must have been in a bad way!!

I haven't felt anything - but it's the noise, and having the dentist prodding around in my mouth.

I tried using an MP3 player to relax me and drown out the noise, but it didn't help.

Just like you, I hadn't been for a long time about 7 years ago, and I had to have 2 broken wisdom teeth removed, as well as 2 or 3 fillings. But the noise - it's just too much for me.

I did attend a local specialist practice - I was in fact treated by the children's dentist lol!

She is very good - but I just can't get past being awake while it's all going on.

Request a referral to a sedation clinic.
