So I might have picked up a last minute place in the Great North Run.

I can easily run 5 / 6 miles no problem. Thursday last week I did 5 in 30 minutes, which is probably my best time! I have to stop a couple times though, through habit if nothing else. These stops really hinder my time but it's a little late in the day to work them out now!

So, my question - I've got two weeks before the GNR which is a half marathon. What would you recommend I do to better prepare myself?

Or am I just plain f*cked? Haha ; )

If you can run 5 miles in 30 mins, just slow down a bit and run for longer. Should be easy for you to complete 13.1 miles as long as you pace yourself correctly.

depends on what your background is, i did the great eastern with a day's notice and no training, got round ok, couldn't move my legs much the day afterwards.

to be honest i'd make sure you eat healthily and get plenty of sleep, not much else will make much difference in 2 weeks!

Are you sure you've measured the 5 mile run correctly? Did you mean 5km? Ive never met anyone that can run sub 6 minute miles for 5 miles and needing to stop?? If you are having to stop, even for just 30 seconds at a time, then that is 5:48 pace. You would be around the 36 minutes for a 10k...which would be very impressive. So something doesnt stack up...sorry!

If you want to stop stopping, then you need to slow down when you start feeling tired, rather than physically stopping. Wont do you any good, and you can potentially strain a muscle.

Sorry for the above rant...just find it a little hard to fathom out.

Miles - ill get the old Run Keeper out next time I'm up for speeding along. The clock read on the hour as I went out, and 30 as I got back. Distance measure with Google Maps.

I think the best plan would be rest and sleep, as said above no great gains could be made in two weeks. Just hope the crowd can pull me along! Haha ; )

5 miles I'm 30mins? That's pretty good going. If you can do that then you should be fine if you pace yourself.

Done!

Got a 1:45 which I'm reasonably happy with. Should have been on for a 1:30 but started well back in the ranks (second hand entry) and spent most of the time fighting through the pack, which I have to admit, was canny good fun. Should have pushed harder at the start too.

Back next year for a sub 1:30, with proper training this time ; )
