I've always been a heavy drinker of strong coffee (proper coffee obviously, not instant!) since I live in CA for a few years. It has become a near addiction now, I must have coffee to be able to work long hours effectively.

You hear so many reports/ studies of how it (or caffein) is good for you and bad for you.

I'm just curious as to how much coffee people drink and how strong?

At what point in the quantity of coffee consumed do the positives become outweighed by the negatives?

Where is the limit to healthy coffee consumption?

When working I tend to drink about 4 expresso sized cups a day. Tea around 10-15 cups of a decent brew. Coffee I have a boredom limit on, tea I can have a mug on the go all day, every day.

Probably about 8 mugs a day, mix of brewed and instant.

Really should drink something else but tea is quite frankly awful, tastes like copper.

3 heaped tablespoons of fresh ground beans each morning, think it works out to 6 expresso's. Then a flask of the same for the day, lasts till about 3pm. If I'm off work its the same in the morning then 1 mug an hour till about 4pm. I sleep very well, just have to stay away from fully automatic weapons and kittens smile

How long did your headaches take to go, I tried to go without but after 4 days the headaches were unbearable.

Coffee in the morning tea in the afternoon, about 4 cups of each a day. I now (recently) work for myself though so drink much less, always drink less coffee at home for some reason.

That about does 'er. Wraps 'er all up!

I've often wondered why 'energy drinks' are limited to 32mg caffein per 100ml when coffee can be WAY stronger than that!

For the record, I HAVE to have a cup as soon as I get up. Two decent tablespoons of ground coffee in a French press for one medium sized mug. Then typcally another 2 or maybe 3 during the day. So my intake is not so much the number of cups, more the strength of each cup.

One coffee with breakfast in the morning, 2 or 3 teas and a few glasses of water in work during the day.

Somewhere between 8 and 20 cups a day Monday to Friday, depending on what kind of day I'm having. 20 is a rare occcurance though, I'd say 8 - 12 is the norm for me. I usually quote 2 - 3 pints as norm.

Today

Instant :
7:10 after 2 hours of driving. With my cereals at my desk.
8:30 after going through my emails and things to do list.
9:15 after my first crap
10:15 when I was bored of work
11:00 when someone I didn't like came to see me
12:00 Ready for my Lunch
1:15 Lunch one drunk cold
2:45 after my second crap
4:00 thinking about what I still need to do before I clock off.

Filter :

6:40 Waiting for my roast chicken to cook
8:50 Eating my roast chicken
9:30 Just logging into PH before bed.

Is that too much coffee? Maybe it explains why I fart so much ?

Any thoughts at what level of intake the cons outweigh the pros?

Hard to tell I guess as there will be a massive variation in how much active ingredients are in a cup.

And how much of the pros and cons are related to coffee or caffeine? Lots of things other than caffeine in coffee after all...

A couple of espressos and 3-4 mugs of tea for me usually. Try to avoid any caffeine in the evening as I'm not the best at getting to sleep as is.

That does seem a lot! Don't know how you can drink instant when you also taste the nirvana that is filter. Depends on the filter though I suppose...

Usually no more than 4 cups day but this increases considerably if I work late or tend to be more bored.

I do enjoy it when my brother comes to visit; as a barista he guarantees a bloody fantastic cup.

I used to drink 9-10 cups of double spoon instant when working 72 hour weeks. Now cut back to 1 instand vend when I arrive at work and maybe one more mid-morning if I'm tired (it has squat all caffeine in it!).

At weekends I'll possible grab a double or triple espresso if I'm tired.

Just noticed the wait gain part of Halb's chart. Reminds me of being shocked looking at nutritional chart for Starbucks drinks. One concoction had 980 kcals!

Well, you definitely won't get weight gain if you keep to a daily calorie deficit...

In any case, caffeine can speed up your metabolism so you lose weight but too much can raise cortisol levels so you store fat. Apparently.
