Another coffee question - when a bag of ground coffee has a 'strength' rating on the side, does this relate to the taste (i.e., the nature of the roasting) or does it reflect caffeine content? Or, perhaps, both?

I'd say it's more about the roast type, a bean will have its own caffine amount

Used to drink loads, now only as a treat.. I feel much better for cutting down. Less stomach ache and afternoon withdrawals...

I have about two..........per month (when out).

More than one a day and I get palpitations.

Surely, if anyone HAS to have one (or any other drink/food/drug) then that, by itself, is a concern...

I drink a cup of tea at home when i wake up to settle my stomach.
Followed by a strong coffee first thing when i get into work to wake me up.
And around 4-5 cups of tea to get me through the day.

3 cups on a working day and 2 teas, then at the weekend 2 coffee and 1 tea....
But you didn't ask about tea did you?

A lot less than I used to, when I worked in a pub/B&B, the first thing I would do at about 7:00 am (give or take half an hour) would be switch coffee machine on, I would then keep topping up a 1/2 pint dimple up for the next 12ish hours.

It's usually for taste, but even then it doesn't have much meaning. The cheaper blends will have a higher caffeine content due to the use of Robusta beans rather than Arabica.

Today

Instant :
7:10 after 2 hours of driving. With my cereals at my desk.
8:30 after going through my emails and things to do list.
9:15 after my first crap
10:15 when I was bored of work
11:00 when someone I didn't like came to see me
12:00 Ready for my Lunch
1:15 Lunch one drunk cold
2:45 after my second crap
4:00 thinking about what I still need to do before I clock off.

Filter :

6:40 Waiting for my roast chicken to cook
8:50 Eating my roast chicken
9:30 Just logging into PH before bed.

Is that too much coffee? Maybe it explains why I fart so much ?

The scale used to be 1 to 5 but now I notice that some brands go up to 6. Does that reflect any real change in the 'boldness' of the coffee or just a reclassification?

It doesn't smell like you'd think actually, more like a sweet grassy/hay. My kitchen at home smells great though smile

They really don't mean anything, there are so many contradicting issues, I won't go into it because it'll bore you to death. I personally don't believe coffee has a strength value. You can always make it stronger by increasing the coffee/water ratio.

Yes, that is what I have always thought!

I really do miss Peet's coffee from the west coast of the US though...

I drink quite a lot, but have learnt to cut it out in the afternoons now since I don't sleep otherwise!

I have a Jura bean-cup machine at home which is amazing. But normally at weekends I have a mug with the '2 cup' option, basically 4 shots of espresso, which is a bit excessive even for me!

Currently I'm working at RR in Derby, where the building I am in has 2 Costa Outlets, which I don't frequent. The Chief Design Engineer, must spend £8 or £10 a day in there, which adds up to £200 a month, or £2000 quid a year, which (assuming he's a higher rate tax payer) must be £3500 before tax. Which is a lot of money on averagely bad coffee.

I call it the £million coffee queue. On average there are 10 engineers who have an average fully amortised overhead rate of 55 quid. (I say average, but it ranges from 5 to 20 people in a queue)
Assuming that they are not productive whilst queueing and they are there 7 hours a day, for 5 days a week for 50 weeks, it's pretty much £1,000,000 There are more buildings with more costa queues, so you could argue that the queues cost £10,000,000 in lost productivity in the UK.

Even if I'm 10 times over, the coffee queue is costing RR £1million quid across all it's sites, so how many tea ladies with a trolley and an urn would you be able to justify, to walk down the offices and give out free tea and coffee ?

My coffee intake varies very widely - I can go for weeks drinking one cup a day (always have a coffee in the morning), but during term time where I am sat at my desk for most of the day I can easily crack 8 cups a day. I try to drink proper stuff if I can, but usually it is instant.

I am not addicted, and I don't think the caffeine has too much of an effect on me. I try to make a point of not drinking any coffee after 6pm as very occasionally (once a month or so) I find that I can't get to sleep. Not sure if this is because of the coffee or just a screwed up sleeping pattern!

I have a shot of espresso as soon as I get into work and a shot about half 3 so I don't fall asleep.

The smell of instant coffee on someones breath actually makes me gag. Vile, utterly disgusting stuff, Mrs is banned from drinking it or I wont go near her...
