On the treadmill, I do 5km @ 5.5% incline- normally average around 26 minutes. I think I could go a bit quicker, if I wasn't so worried about picking up strains from the treadmill....in doing so I end up probably resembling Arjen Robben's running action.

It's much more comfortable outdoors.

Funny, I always worked on the basis of 3.2 for 5k and 6.4 for a 10k. Strange that I have never really checked.

I cycle 2 miles to work and it takes me 12 mins, so I figure 3.12 miles would take 18 mins.

If I was running along side me, I could not keep up. Feck I must be unfit.

I extrapolate it from the standard car performance measure.

0-62 mph in X sec.

62mph = 100 kph
6.2 miles = 10k
3.1 miles = 5k

I can do 5k in 24 and a bit btw.

I've been running for a while and recently ran 16:58. Unless you run regularly I'm sorry you won't run 17. It takes work. Lots.

Edit - for the record, I train either 6 or 7 times a week (but always one day off so do the odd double day) and lately 45-50 miles per week.

No disrespect to anyone on this thread but even 20mins is a world away from 17mins so I want to see you get your initial prediction of sub 18. We all know op is going to show results and claim to be someone else.

That's why a local PHer should be despatched for quality control purposes.

No disrespect taken as a currently 20 minute 5k-er! I hope to have 19.something and maybe ultimately 18.something at some stage once I train more, so maybe I'll only be a hemisphere away!

hehe

i NEVER mean any disrespect to anyone who runs, whether they're Kenenisa Bekele quick, or 30+ min for a 5k....they're out running, that's the main thing.

the only person who "runs" who i do disrespect is someone who went out with my best mate, who said the fact i ran under 17mins for a 5k as "disgusting" and "ridiculous"....said person ran over 70mins for a 10k....literally 1/2 my pace as i'm around 35 dead (i'm quicker than a chap who ran 35:20....i know that for sure!).

I don't - I think the OP is fair dink'um - however your post is a little aggressive. He does run regularly - just round in circles....

I expect the OP to post up a Youtube vid of a montage of his performance, perhaps with sections in super slo-mo, suitably dubbed with an atmospheric and uplifting backing track.

'Days Like These' by Elbow for example.

OP - Is it a road 5k?

In my first ever 5k I got 20:37 after not very much training at all, Nearly a year later my PB is 18:20 so forget anything near 17min. If you crack 20min you've done really well. Let us know.

I'll go out on a limb and say you'll not get within 2 minutes of that.

And that's not me being disrespectful . . . to run a sub 20 5k takes some impressive muscular endurance, let alone 2 or 3 minutes quicker (which is orders of magnitude tougher than you'd think to achieve).

I'm not sure what sort of footie you play, but even if it's 11 a side, I doubt very much whether you'd build the ME necessary for the sorts of times you're talking about playing just 3 times a week.

My best time at parkrun (free timed 5k runs) is 25:54. I'm reasonably fit (bootcamp twice a week, jog once a week, 10k x country runs every few months) albeit old at 42 wink as others have said sub 20mins is for the very best runners.

Came second in 18:37. Winner finished about 5 seconds in front, out sprinted me at the end. 3rd was about 19 minutes. Then I don't think anyone else crossed under 20 minutes. It was mainly non runners who were just doing it for charity (hospice) and there were only around 75 doing it

Pretty pleased with that time but my calves are feeling it a bit now
