Had someone sign me up for a 5k this Sunday and sprung it on me yesterday. Not one for going out and just running but do a fair amount of football so fairly fit

What sort of time should I be aiming for? Is 17 minutes seen as a decent time?

Anything sub 20m is a very respectable time.

Unless you are a regular runner and very fit I doubt you would be able to get anywhere near 17 minutes. Anything under 30 is average, under 25 is good and sub 20 is impressive.

Fair enough, i'll report back next Monday morning

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict 17.59 vomit

Good show. I've been running for about 5 months and my PB is 29 minutes. I am still considerably over weight though and didn't do much exercise before that.

When I was running regularly I managed 21 minutes as a personal best. 10k I was able to best in 45 minutes, so not too far off the same pace.

Under 20 is definitely running fast!

I regularly take part in the weekly Parkrun 5k event and at our most recent event, 50 people out of 315 finished before 20 minutes (mostly made up of club runners and other very fit individuals), or 16%. Most runners (63%) finish between 20 and 30 minutes, and most people after 30 minutes are women (maybe 30% of total attendance) just to give you an idea of where to pitch yourself.

Interesting. I'd be a bit disappointed to be over 20 minutes I think

It'll be interesting to see if you do sub 20, let alone sub 18 .... whilst football is good for general fitness, it is a very different thing to doing a lot of steady paced running. Unless you are already in very good shape.

Report back, will be interesting to see how it goes.

I have always benchmarked 25 minutes as my standard 5k time, but mostly as I am a longer distance runner where endurance counts more than speed.

Consider a 25m 5k is running at 12 km/h and a 20 minute one is obviously 15 km/h - that is quite a difference.

But you are a way younger than me so a few 6.15 minute miles shouldn’t be too hard for you.

I think my one and only race so far was 24.57 thats me being a smoker and had a bit of timber and not very fit. I did very little training id only ran 5k once before the race. TBH i did run my conkers off i was very pleased with that as my aim was to just finnish under 30min.

Well pre season has just finished and playing/training 3 times a week so base fitness is there. Always been able to run well as I swam competitively until I was 15

Definitely got to be aiming for sub 20 minutes

I'd be very surprised if you can do sub 20 without knowing that you could, I.e regular runner.

This... I've been running on and off for four years and have at about 24:30 for a 5k. Granted I wasn't particularly fit before that though. I regularly have people run with me who train and play rugby competitively, play 5 a side football, regular gym goers and whilst they are fit they can generally run between 22-25 mins. To break 20 minutes takes a lot of very focused training.

That said, FairPlay if you do manage it! smile

How fast can you run a lap (400m)? To get a 17m 5k you need to run 12.5 laps in 1m21.6s each, not easy but good luck.

Usually they live it if you come second......

World record is what 12:37 . Different world in terms of speed.

Plenty of scope for the OP to improve to....;)

What's 5K in old money ? 3.5 miles? I reckon I could cycle it in 20 mins.

5km in 17 mins is a very fast time, so unless you're an extremely fit footballer I'd say you don't have a chance. I'd even go so far as to say if you can do 5km in 17 minutes with no running training, then you should quit football and try and make a career in running.
