Quick Protein Shake Question
Discussion
I normally go to the gym in the mornings before breakfast as I cant stomach eating first thing. Then when I return I have a MyProtein Recovery XS shake with milk. This fills me up and acts as my breakfast.
I've been thinking that Id like to try it the other way round and have a shake before I exercise. Just wondered what shake I could buy that would act as a liquid breakfast and give me the energy for the gym?

If the XS Recovery shake is purely a protein shake with no carbs, wouldn't it be a lot better to also have some toast or oats with it just so you get some nice carbs and fibre in you as part of your breakfast?
You're better off with having protein after, pre-workout supplements tend to be more about getting you woken up and boosting your energy with the protein used after to help rebuild/repair your muscles.
edit: Just had a look at the Recovery Shake on the Myprotein website and it does include carbs so it should be fine as breakfast but i'd still rather have something solid in my stomach like oats. With the pre-workout stuff, i've not really bothered that much with the pre-workout stuff as it's never really done anything for me. Best advise though would be to give it a try and see how you feel, making sure you grab something afterwards still. I've never been able to workout first thing in the morning though as it takes a couple of hours for my central nervous system to wake up enough to be happy with the weights.

Not really sure to be honest. This thread is mainly driven from a visit to the Drs last week because I was feeling dizzy. I mentioned to the doc that Id started going to the gym but went without eating anything first. I thought it was worth mentioning just in case it was a contributing factor.
The Dr advised against going on an empty stomach and said to have something even if it was just a milkshake.

Dizziness when exercising has fk all to do with blood glucose levels unless you are doing serious endurance work, it's more likely to do with low blood pressure and will probably get worse if you eat something as the blood flow to the stomach increases
Warm up properly, have a coffee in the morning.
Are you new to training, are you taking alpha/beta blockers?

Just back off the intensity a bit until your cardiovascular system has enough go-go-juice to feed the necessary blood/oxygen to both your muscles and your brain at the same time.
Beat me to it! also don't just rely on shakes, eat real food as well. What are your goals? Increase muscle? Endurance? Look good in a mankiny? Set a sensible goal and work towards it Anthony Micallef said:

It looks like something i made myself, a single scoop of protein powder, 50g of porridge oats, skimmed milk and then blend it all up in a good blender, i tended to drink this after my weights, i also popped a banana in it as well but got to look at the consistency and how thick it ends up lol. With the dizziness, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and ease into it. Is the dizziness something that has just come on when you started working out? Would it be possible to go in the evening instead of trying to work out on a completely empty stomach? If i was you, i'd change things for a week or so and just see how you feel with having something before a workout, even if it's something like a banana or a cereal bar, just so you've got something in your stomach when you go to the gym and see how you feel. My breakfast on the program I'm doing is 50g rolled oats and a scoop and a half of Myofusion protein with water - leave it about 20 mins for the oats soften up and I have it with a cup of black coffee. I then go and do 20mins cardio after about half an hour.
This is around 6:30am-ish - I then start the main day meals at 9:30am.
