Reiki - any experiences?
Discussion
Firstly, please don't bother posting stuff like "It's st" "waste of cash" etc, unless you've got something really valuable to add.
Haters gonna hate, etc......
I'm as cynical as the next man however I've had some really odd experiences lately.
My sister-in-law did it to me a few years ago, it was very relaxing, and as it turned out, quite emotional for some reason. (maybe the first time I relaxed properly after running at 102% all the time)
I enjoyed the experience, and just wondered if anyone else had anything they'd like to add, good or bad, without just being usual PH cynics and totally dismissing it.

Another cynic here but received 'treatment' once from a trainee practitioner. Highly suspicious of the culture of trainers/students in the background and the beliefs behind the practices.
However, have to admit that it's probably the most chilled out ive been without alcohol etc being involved.
I'd say it works in the same way as hypnosis probably does (i've not experienced that first hand) but with added mumbo-jumbo.

A company I worked at had an ex employee come in that was starting up in this business to give her a boost. I was really surprised at how relaxing it was. You almost go to sleep it is that good. I said I seen this big eye (honestly) and she said that it was very common as we relax into the session. Strange thing but enjoyable.
There are two points. First of all, much of Reiki "training" seems to be along the lines of pyramid schemes, with money changing hand for knackered photocopies of documents. I'm not saying this is universal, but there seems to be a lot of it about. Many "experts" who just wave their hands around and say mystical things.
Secondly. Never discount the power of placebo. Placebo is not the same as "no effect at all". Especially in cases which have a strong psychological element (and that includes anything which involves pain perception) then placebo can have a very strong effect indeed.

Personally, I think it is no more than this. The only hard evidence seems to be couched in vague "oh it was in a medical trial" test with no actual clinical data. If it can invoke the placebo effect then it has merit in my opinion, but no more.

A Facebook friend of mine keeps offering to do 'distance reiki' for me. She tells me I have to let her know what time I will be in bed and she will send some reiki over the air waves. I told her I work on a moving ship, so how will she know where to send the stuff, but she insists it will work.
Other people on the receiving end relate how they woke up next day feeling so refreshed.........
She wonders why I don't respond any more.

This. Applies to most alternative therapies. However, if it illicits the Placebo effect in you, then it is working.Secondly. Never discount the power of placebo. Years ago I had Reiki and the woman doing it said she felt massive heat on part of my body and asked me if I had any problems in that area, my response was no. However sometime later I was diagnosed with advanced cancer in that area.
Interesting and kind of relevant as to why I'm asking. Thank you. I'm a bit of a Japanophile (Nippopheliac), anyway I've been several times for several reasons and practice a martial art with a couple who practice Reiki and I've nothing to say but positive things.
It's not going to cure you of lung cancer, but if you want to just feel better I'd recommend it, it makes me feel better and helps me to centre emotionally and physically.

Interesting too - have you ever experienced Chi (Qi) whilst doing martial arts? It's not going to cure you of lung cancer, but if you want to just feel better I'd recommend it, it makes me feel better and helps me to centre emotionally and physically.

I wonder how many people she said that to? You are just that 5% who she got it right with!Areas I'd choose would be 1: the head, 2: chest/breast area, 3: abdomen, 4: groin....that about covers all common cancers.....so thats a 25% chance of guessing right!

But that said you can fairly easilly experience Ki or demonstrate it, it is something I use not only in martial arts but in everyday life, especially when centred around breathing and concentrating on centering my physical body for maximum balance and stability, it's not a trick or an illusion, it's not supernatural, but it does involve harnessing something that wouldn't necessarilly be available to the unpracticed, it's just a technique or tool to get you and your mind and body connected so your body can do something in a specific way, usually obtain a better physical balance.
That's just my opinion, I do know people who think that the KiAi (that's the shout Japanese martial artists do) contains some form of physical and spiritual energy. It's certainly been around a long time.
