You'll be fine!

My best mate had an artificial valve fitted a couple of months back, a bit of Aorta replaced or repaired and a pacemaker fitted.

He's doing really well.

He's only 58!

Good luck....
Glad to hear he is doing well smile I am only 23 so will hopefully have a fairly smooth ride, or a rough ride if the nurse is into that biggrin

As the OP knows, this is a serious and risky operation as it sounds like he is suffering from aortic dissection, as well as ventricle and valve failure (I have waited until he is under to post this as I didn't want to post anything he might read as negative..............until he is out the other side by which time it will have been a success!)

On the plus side, he has age and (I assume) good general health on his side.

Best of luck OP!

I was thinking more towards Marfans or congenital issue as his ventricle is involved and he's only young (sounds like a redo operation too).

Good Luck OP, it sure isn't an easy operation for the surgeon by the sounds of it.

Edit... Re read your first post... Female consultant... If its who I think it is, your in good hands.

How long is this type of op expected to last on average assuming all goes smoothly?

I'd say 5-6 hours skin to skin.

I'd have thought longer (just going off experiences of a couple of people I know) but that aside, how do you concentrate for that long and what about breaks etc? My daughter is a doctor and she says she isn't interested in surgery because it's boring, hot and uncomfortable and you need very high concentration levels.

Guess you've answered you're own question. You're either made of the right stuff to be a surgeon or you're not!

That's assuming it goes smoothly. You could easily add on another 3 hours for even opening up, due to the previous op. then possible bleeding afterwards.

The op will (more than likely be out by now).

The young lad was due to have it started at 8am so he would have been out along time ago.
