There are scary and success stories out there, but assuming you do your research properly, would you consider having your Dental work done abroad?

I would consider it, however the only thing I saw last time is that the materials they used are not quite up to the level in the UK, for example those nasty metal fillings, etc.

Few people I know have gone and saved a lot of money on teeth work.

I was discussing this recently.

I need a couple of bridges done and a few other bits and bobs and asked my own dentist for a quote. The price was about £4K in total which seemd a total and piss take to me for just a few hours work.

I'm interested to see if anyone comes on thread with some real world experience of going overseas as I might as well take a holiday and get the work done at the same time!

At least I'd likely get a free holiday.

I gather USA dentists consider our methods and materials out of the dark ages - but would a flight to Miami or New York plust treatment make it worthwhile?

BTW...I agree with such extortionate charges. I went to a Rolex dealer and bought a nice watch. It cost several grand and all the bloody shop hand did was show it to me and take my cash!...the bloody chancer. A few grand for a couple of minutes work!

Hmmm... well it seemed somewhat excessive to the price she'd given me just 12 months before for the same work, which was about £2k all in. But then I suppose they could have the basis of the price of the materials linked to gold or something else that has doubled in cost in 12 months.

There are superb dentists in Canada and in general my personal experience is that it is much better than UK.

Can thoroughly recommend going abroad, been going to Krakow for the last 3 years & conclude a far superior experience all round. The equipment& surgery is much more u-t-d & for instance, someone above referred to our metal filings, they are absolutely horrified when they see these.

It's the CQC who are scaremongering and CJD is the main reason why dentists have to spend £10000s on new cross infection processes.

A failure to comply with cross infection standards could be as simple as having an overflow hole on a sink.

In all seriousness, I can highly recommend a hungarian dentist on the Hungarian side of the Austrian border. Been to him several times and he is a family friend. If any of you want details, PM me.

A friend of mine works in Cyprus where having an autoclave isn't a legal necessity.
I recently read on a GDP forum of a pt returning from dental treatment in India with Hep B.

I'm fussy who treats me here, never mind going to an unknown abroad, where there might be language barriers, confusion, unregistered, uninsured.....

My dentition is precious to me!

We tried an NHS dentist in the UK when we moved there ten years ago, and he was an animal! He forced me to have a root canal on a tooth that I knew had already been done. Then he charged me £165 for putting a crown on an unnecessary tooth repair. Then he filled it too high so my teeth didn't close properly. Then he ground the wrong tooth down to make them meet. Then he dropped something on my head!

His staff laughed at him, as he was a fkin' idiot!

He used his anaesthetic syringe like a javelin! Straight in, one thrust, fkin' agony.

So we never went back.

Then we used a private dentist, who was great, for some 6 years until we moved back to the Philippines.

I recently had a full panoramic tooth Xray, and clean and polish. My wife and daughter both had a clean and polish too, and the bill was £20

I later had a large molar filling, after I cracked it eating nuts, cost £8.

The dentists facility is second to none, clean as a whistle, flat screen TV in front of you in the chair so they can show you your Xray on the PC. And one in the roof so you can see their camera when you are laid back. Somebody spent some serious money setting this place up.

Is it better to go to one that uses a laser instead of a drill and is there a root canal technique that actually works (100% failure rate with me)?

For me it feels like when you drill a tooth for a filling, tiny peripheral cracks form and these cracks become worse as you use the tooth.

I'm glad you've found a great dentist. But with those charges I wonder just how much their costs are! That treatment must 've taken maybe 45-60 minutes. Take away the electric, insurance, nurses and receptionists wages, rent, materials, equipment........cant be done in the UK without some serious shortcuts! Why dont people moan about sparkies, car mechanics, plumbers............bet you dont get one fully equiped for 20 quid and hour!
I seriously don't understand how people survive in this country, when average salaries are less than a fiver a day, but all the decent specialist equipment is imported from overseas. Electricity costs more than in the UK, petrol is about half the price, a house maid earns £75 a month and a good house builder earns £200

I'd reckon the receptionist in our dentist will be earning £5 a day, maximum.
