I currently use Focus Dailies contact lenses. I have no problem with them, but am curious about monthly disposable lenses.

My understanding (which might be wrong)is that monthly disposables have to be taken out each night and put into a de-proteinising solution. But now a colleague says that you can get monthlies that you put in and forget about for the month, sleeping in them, etc. Is that right? Can't be good for your eyes, surely? If it is right, what brand so that I can give them a try?

Specsavers do a plan for them, I tried them on a 5 day trial and couldn't get on with them, I think they are a bit bigger or were! than the daily disposables and it just felt like I had something in my eye all the time. I need a lense with a high water content though so that may have effected it. A couple of friends swear by them though.

Don't want to do a plan, just curious as to how they work really. I buy all my lenses from Feel Good Lenses on the 'net.

I use disposable 2 weekly lenses.

My understanding is its completely personal preference as to you taking them out on a night time.

My eyes dry out very easily so I always take them out but on the odd occasion I forget (normally when Ive had a good drink) and they are a bit dry in the morning but cause no problems.

My mates GF is on monthlys and she leaves hers on for the entire month - I presume its more of a personal/comfort option but Im sure your optician will give you better sound advice.

I have used monthly disposable lenses for years and have always been told to take them out, clean and soak them overnight. I don't think I could wear them constantly as after about 14 hours my eyes usually get a bit uncomfortable.

Which is why I use the dailies. I can't be arsed with all the faff of soaking and stuff.

I wear lenses that you leave in for a month and sleep in (for around 3-4years now). They are very good, I get a contact lense check every 6 months and have never had a problem with them.

My eyes sometimes get dry and I have to move them back to the correct position in a morning. Thats the only problem ive had, that and the usual contact lense problem of the laser etching being too deep and irritating my eyes.

Im with Boots. I pay £13 a month which covers all lense (including spares) all checkups (2 a year), eye tests (1 a year) and ad hoc checkups if they are needed.

But ask your optician about them.

I had a bking last time for wearing my normal monthly pair for more than 8 hours a day. She said the blood vessels were becoming more prominent due to lack of oxygen. I'm not sure how 24hr ones would overcome that.

Off topic - I was talking to someone the other day whose optician told them not to wear theirs in the shower. Is this common knowledge as I've been through 5 or 6 opticians and never heard it mentioned in 10 years of wearing?

Certain contact lenses such as biofinity lenses are marketed for extended wear use. By that I mean continuous wear, all day and all night. They are manufactured and licensed for such a use. Many people put a contact lens in and wear it for four weeks without taking them out or even cleaning them. These lenses are generally very oxygen permeable and are made of a silicone hydrogel material. It is perfectly possible to wear a contact lens in this way. I would personally however never recommend this. You may get away with it for several years. However you may not. Contact lenses are not without risk. Although most people wear them sensibly with no adverse reactions, a small minority run into serious and even sight threatening problems. The more you wear them the more likely you are to run into problems like severe bacterial keratitis which is a potentially severe infection of your cornea, the clear window into your eye. It can leave severe scarring which can potentially reduce your vision permanently. Wearing lenses at night while you sleep increases your risk without any significant benefit in my opinion. The only benefit I can see is that you wake up with good vision, but I bet your eyes will be a little crustysmile sleep with your specs by your bedside is my honest advice. The other problem with wearing them continuously is that it increases your risk of infection with Acanthomoeba, which is a water born ubiquitous parasite that again is very uncommon but can cause blinding infections. You catch it from showering, swimming or using a jacuzzi while wearing your lenses. If you do none of these then you will unlikely never catch it. Extended wear lenses are often very comfortable and much more affordable than daily disposable lenses but my advice would be to always take them out in the evening, wash them to remove proteinaceous materials that build up on the surface of a lens an store them in fresh solution every night. Wear them for the minimal period and consider one day a week where you don't wear them. Always see a contact lens optom and never consider buying them online to save money. Remember that are great but people do have their vision permanently damaged from inappropriate wear.

CG500, thank you very much for that. Very informative. Think I'll stick with my Focus Dailies! I usually go a day a week with specs anyway. Longest I've ever worn my lenses was 18 hours and that was on a road trip. By the time I took them out they were worse than useless and my eyes very dry and tired.

I was curious to know how these monthlies worked, I used to hate the soaking and stuff with my old gas permeable lenses. That was the reason I went to dailies, put in forget about them, check down the loo at night!

Im aware of all the things that CG500 has said and am very careful about my eyes.

But I have been wearing extended wear lenses for somewhere in the region of 4 years. I do get my eyes checked frequently.

Does anyone know if these - http://www.gizmag.com/go/3047/ work and if they are approved in the UK?
