Nope, never smoked, and rarely drink.

Phoned the wife last night, she tells me she had a similar thing to mine a few years ago when we were in England. She had a cold, kept feeling this horrible thing every time she swallowed. Coming from a third world country where parasites and worms are common, she was convinced she had one inside her throat......
The doctor (private, as NHS just told her 'it is nothing') did a thorough examination and told her it was some inflammation of the back of the tongue, like taste buds, but they're not, that you can feel if you shove your fingers right down the back of the tongue.
Sure enough, I 'went deep' with my fingers last night and I could feel several little lumps that feel pretty 'unusual'.
I had similar a couple of years ago. Had the camera treatment and the consultant said it was acid reflux resulting in swelling at the back of the throat. Said it was often the case that you can't actually detect the reflux and can happen in your sleep, all you get is the effect which is the inflammation.
I did actually have a bit of acid reflux/acid indigestion type thing a week or so ago, can't remember if it was before or after this throat thing started though. Could be related.
I used to get acid reflux a lot years ago, but then it stopped. My little 'medical stash' has half a dozen different types of antacid tabs in. Also used to get mouth ulcers a lot after about four weeks offshore, but then they too stopped a couple of years ago. Thus the three or four tubes of old Bonjela in my kit.

What about Post Nasal Drip? After a cold I had about two years I found I was constantly clearing my throat and I also lost my sense of smell. First Doc said that's life, deal with it.
Second Doc reckoned I had a small polyp in my nostril and gave me some drugs which I never took. What cleared it for me was the 5/2 fast diet on the Horizon programme this Summer. Sense of smell came back, no longer coughing, fantastic.

My first thought was post nasal drip. Any sinus pain?
I googled various key words from the OP, the most common result is oesophageal, or, acid reflux.
if you were 70 or older, I would have said pharyngeal pouch.
Various causes of acid reflux are:
Excess drinking, smoking, being overweight, stress, diet.
Heavily starchy foods such as pastry or mashed potatoes can aggravate reflux.

GERDS - I had the same symptoms and diagnosis. A couple of years ago I was convinced I could feel a lump at the top of my throat when I swallowed.
As a normal male I self-diagnosed this as terminal cancer; had a couple of miserable weeks worrying about it, planning video messages for the kids once I was dead (usual sort of stuff).
The GP referred me to a specialist who stuck a camera up my nose. The problem was due to stomach acid slightly burning the throat.
I was prescribed Omaprazole (stops the acid being generated) and I've had no re-occurrence.
It's worth getting it sorted if it is this, apparently the lesion can eventually turn a bit nasty and lead to cancer in the end.

I have cut down now, but I did go on a bit of a coffee binge for several weeks as work was slack and it relives the boredom.

Hell yes, five minutes on Google and I KNEW it was cancer, so I came straight to PH for an expert diagnosis to alleviate the fear. Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
